The Role of Teachers in Team Teaching

이 연구의 목적은 팀티칭에 참여한 학생, 원어민 교사, 한국인 교사 등 세 집단의 특성이 영어 듣기 말하기를 위한 팀티칭 수업에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보고, 성공적인 팀티칭을 위한 각자의 역할이 무엇인지를 알아보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 세 집단을 대상으로 몇 가지 설문조사를 실시하여 팀티칭의 다양한 측면에 대한 의견을 물었는데, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교사의 개인적 자질은 그들의 수업 기술과 교실 관리 능력 기술에 높은 상관을 보였고, 학생들의 수업 참여도는 그들의 언어 기능 발달과 높은 상관을 보였다. 둘째, 한국인 교사가 원어민 교사보다 학생들의 학습에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학생들은 교사의 열정적인 참여, 이해심 많은 태도, 유우머, 좋은 품성, 학생들을 동료들 앞에서 두려움에 당황하지 않도록 하는 수업 기술 등을 높이 평가하였다. 넷째, 원어민 교사와 한국인 교사 모두 영어 말하기를 잘 하기 위해서는 자신감과 높은 동기가 필요함을 강조하였다. 그들은 또한 팀티칭 동료 사이에 협력의 중요성을 강조하였고, 대부분의 문제점이 수업 준비의 부족, 부족한 대화, 상대방에 대한 오해 등에서 비롯됨을 지적하였다.

This study is aimed at identifying how the team teaching for English listening and speaking is affected by the characteristics of the three groups of participants such as the students, native English speaking teachers (NESTs), and Korean teachers of English (KTEs), and finding out their desirable roles for the successful implementation of team teaching. Several kinds of survey were conducted to ask their opinions on the various aspects of the team teaching. The results are as follows. (1) Teachers preparedness appeared to be closely related to their teaching skills and classroom-management strategies, and the students participation appeared to be deeply connected to their language skill development. (2) The KTEs appeared to be much more influential to the student s learning in team teaching than the NESTs. (3) The students highly valued teachers passionate involvement, understanding attitudes, humor, good personalities, and strategies facilitating the students to overcome the fear of being embarrassed in front of their peers. (4) The NESTs and KTEs stressed that self-confidence and motivation are needed for the students to be good English speakers. They also emphasized the importance of cooperation of the NESTs and KTEs, and indicated that most of the problems stem from lack of preparation, poor communication, and misunderstanding between the two parties.
