영어환경과 동기에 따른 영어자료와 동화경험

Students Experiences in English Storybooks in Korean Elementary School

본 연구는 초등학교 고학년 학생들을 대상으로 영어환경과 흥미에 따른 영어동화 읽기 경험을탐색함으로써 영어동화를 통해 학생들의 영어능력을 신장시키는 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 학교 외부와 가정에서 초등학생들이 어떻게 영어를 경험하는지 탐색하기 위해 초등학교 고학년생을 대상으로 설문조사와 인터뷰를 실시하였고 초등교사, 예비 초등교사를 대상으로 인터뷰와 토의를 하였다. 연구 결과, 가정에 소지하고 있는 책과 독서량의 비례관계를 확인하였다. 영어동화를 읽고 싶어하는 학생이 영어동화를 읽고 싶어하지 않는 학생에 비하여 약 1.8배 더 많은 책을 소지하고 있으며 약 1.8배 더 많은 책을 독서한 것으로 나타났다. 학생들의 영어능력 향상을 위해서는 가정, 교실, 학교, 공공도서관을 통해 광범위한 책에의 노출을 시킴으로써 꾸준하게 조용히 독서하기가 실행될 수 있도록 도움을 줄 필요가 있다.

This study aims at investigating experiences of 5th and 6th grade elementary schoolstudents in reading English storybooks in order to find how to improve their English ability. The subjects were elementary school students to whom the questionnaire were given and wereinterviewed on their experiences of reading English storybooks. Elementary school teacherswere interviewed on students experiences in using English storybooks in school. Pre-serviceteachers discussed the results of the questionnaire and interviews. This study shows that more access to books leads more reading books. English-friendlyenvironments should be created in which students can enjoy free voluntary reading andsustained silent reading. It is recommended that classroom libraries or, school libraries have agood selection of English story books. Teachers should encourage and motivate students toenjoy their reading English books as much as possible.
