Exploring the Meaning of Play to Ensure the Right to Play: Homo Ludens, Dreaming of Playing Children

  • 56

This study aims to explore the meaning of children s play from the fundamental meaning that children s play is homo ludens, not a tool for learning and development or an unproductive and time-wasting activity. In other words, the essence and meaning of play was explored from the perspective of Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois, and play was re-examined in terms of the quality of life and the right to play in modern society. Through this analysis, it is expected that play will be respected as a active and free activity of children by real recovery to pure play and by all people positively recognizing the value and meaning of play. Lastly, it is arguably necessary that our society should prioritize the freedom and pleasure as a fundamental factor of play and emphasize the time and space of play constituted from children s angle and various experiences from the activity. And also, this research points to the value of culture technology to increase the opportunity of providing children with more play rather than artificially forced learning.
