존 듀이의 흥미의 교육 원리와 상상력의 필요성

본 연구의 목적은 듀이의 관점에서 학교교육의 필요성, 흥미의 교육 원리, 사회적 삶과 상상력의 연속적 관계 특성에 근거해 교육에서 상상력이 필요한 이유에 대해 탐구하는 것이다. 듀이는 사회의 규모가 커지고 복잡해짐에 따라 학교교육은 사회의 소중한 가치와 의미 있는 삶의 양식 전달을 위해 꼭 필요하며, 이때 상상력은 학교교육을 통해 전달해야 할 소중한 가치 중 하나라고 보았다. 교육에서 학습자의 성장은 능동적인 참여자의 자세를 가질 때 더욱 효과적으로 이루어지며, 듀이에게 있어 흥미는 이러한 능동적 자세로서 경험 대상과 관계맺음을 통해 일체화된 학습자의 마음이다. 흥미의 교육 원리는 교과내용이 직접적 흥미로부터 전이된 간접적 흥미가 되도록 하는 것이며, 이 과정은 관련성을 지각하는 상상력이 동원된 사고를 통해 일어난다. 그리고 학교교육의 모든 활동은 사회화된 성향을 형성하는 것에 기본적으로 종속된다. 이로써 학교교육에서 교과 내용의 의미 획득과 그를 통해 학습자의 경험 지평을 확장하는 데에는 상상력을 동원한 사고 훈련과 흥미의 교육 원리가 조화롭게 활용될 가치와 필요가 있으며, 모든 교육 활동은 사회적 삶의 양식에 기초하여 설계되어야 함을 확인하였다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the necessity of imagination in education from Dewey s point of view based on continuous relationship characteristics of the necessity of school education, educational principles of interest, social life and imagination. According to Dewey, as society grows and becomes more complex, schooling is essential for delivering valuable social values and a meaningful way of life. At this time, he saw imagination as one of the precious values to be transmitted through school education. The learner s growth in education is more effective when he has an active participant s attitude, and Dewey s interest is the learner s mind integrated through relationship with the object of experience as this active attitude. The educational principle of interest is to make the subject content become indirect interest transferred from direct interest, and this process takes place through imaginative thinking that perceives relevance. In addition, all activities of school education for the purpose of continuous growth are basically subordinated to the formation of socialized tendencies. Thus, in order for learners to acquire the meaning of subject content and expand the horizon of experience in school education, thinking training using imagination and educational principle of interest need to be harmoniously utilized, and all educational activities should be designed on the basis of social lifestyles.
