공화주의 시민의 덕성으로서 ‘극기복례’ 개념 재탐색

A Reinterpretation of Confucian Moral Concept ‘Geukgibokrae(克己復禮)’ for Republican Civic Education

이 글은 민주주의에 관한 교육적 관심이 증가하고 있는 오늘날, 공공선을 추구하는 시민교육은 참여민주주의만으로 충분히 달성할 수 없다는 진단 하에 공화주의 이념에 주목한다. 공화주의는 두터운 공동체주의가 위협할 수 있는 개인의 자유를 훼손하지 않을 수 있다는 점에서 오늘날 우리 사회를 살아가는 젊은이들의 지향에 어긋나지 않으면서도, 개인주의적 삶에 대한 강조와 취향이 존중되면서 나를 넘어선 가치에 대해 무관심할 수 있는 이기주의의 위험성을 보완할 수 있다. 특히 마이클 샌델이 해석하는 공화주의 시민의 덕성은 정치적 자유주의에 비해 윤리적 ‘판단’의 기능을 중시하기 때문에 현재 한국사회의 민주주의적 삶의 방식에 긴급히 요청된다고 할 수 있다. 한편 샌델이 말하는 공화주의 시민의 덕성은 스스로를 규제할 수 있는 자기통치(self-rule)의 실현을 전제로 하는데, 이 덕성은 유교의 덕목 중 ‘극기복례(克己復禮)’와 상당부분 통한다고 보인다. 그리하여 이 글은 ‘극기복례’가 어떻게 서구적 맥락에서의 자기통치 개념에 대응하여 이해될 수 있는지 탐색하고, 궁극적으로 오늘날 시민성을 함양하는 교육적 접근은 전통적 규범을 새롭게 재해석하여 우리에게 체화된 문화적 감수성을 이끌어내는 데에서 비롯될 필요가 있다고 제안한다.

This article focuses on the concept of republicanism under the diagnosis that civic education pursuing common good cannot be sufficiently achieved only by participatory democracy today when educational interest in democracy is increasing. At this time, it can be understood that republicanism does not violate the orientation of young people living in our society in that thick communitarism can not undermine individual freedom, but can complement the risk of selfishness that can be indifferent to values beyond me. In particular, the republican civic virtue interpreted by Michael Sandel is currently requested by Korean society in that it values the function of ethical “judgment” rather than political liberalism. Based on the fact that Sandel s republican civic virtues presuppose the realization of self-rule that can regulate itself, I then paid attention to the concept of “Geukgibokrae(克己復禮)” among Confucian virtues and explored how this concept can be understood in response to self government in the Western context. Through this, it is suggested that the civic educational approach that ultimately fosters citizenship today needs to result from a new reinterpretation of traditional norms and elicit embodied cultural sensitivity to us.
