The Meaning and Characteristics of Morality on the Nicomachean Ethics

본 연구의 목적은 『니코마코스 윤리학』에 나타난 도덕성의 개념을 드러내어, 도덕교육을 통한 도덕성 함양이 인간을 삶의 궁극적인 목적인 행복에 이르게 할 수 있음을 밝히려는 것이다. 연구의 흐름은 도덕성의 개념, 도덕성의 발달 원리, 도덕교육의 방법, 그리고 도덕교육 목적으로서의 에우다이모니아 순으로 이어진다. 첫째, 도덕성의 개념은 『니코마코스 윤리학』에 나타난 탁월성을 통해 구체화된다. 둘째, 성격적 탁월성에서 지적 탁월성으로의 이행에서 외견상 발생하는 불연속성이 도덕성의 발달 과정에서 나타나는 자연스러운 현상임을 성격적 탁월성의 이면에 내재하여 있는 지적 탁월성의 측면을 통해 드러낸다. 셋째, 도덕교육의 방법은 성격적 탁월성을 기르는 초기 도덕교육과 성격적 탁월성에 토대를 두고 지적 탁월성을 기르는 후기 도덕교육으로 이루어져 있음을 설명한다. 마지막으로, 인간은 도덕적 삶을 통해 행복한 삶을 누리는 에우다이모니아 상태에 이를 수 있음을 본 연구의 결론을 통해 밝힌다.

The purpose of this study is to clarify that cultivating morality can lead human beings to happiness, an ultimate goal of life, by examining the concept of morality on the Nicomachean Ethics. The process of this study is as follows; the concept of morality, the principles of moral development, the method of moral education, and Eudaimonia as the purpose of moral education. First, the concept of morality is embodied through the excellence shown in Nicomachean ethics. Second, the seeming discontinuity arising from the transition from moral excellence to intellectual excellence is a natural phenomenon in the process of moral development through the aspect of intellectual excellence inherent behind moral excellence. Third, it is explained that the method of moral education consists of early moral education that fosters moral excellence and late moral education that fosters intellectual excellence based on moral excellence. Finally, it is revealed through the conclusion of this study that humans can reach the state of Eudaimonia, which means to enjoy a happy life through moral life.
