독도 관련 고지도의 현황과 특징 분석

Analysis of the Current Status and Characteristic of Dokdo-Related Old Maps: Focusing on the Old Maps owened by Yeungnam University

이 연구는 영남대학교가 소장하고 있는 고지도 자료 중 총 48점의 울릉도․독도 관련 지도를 통해 독도가 한국의 영토인 근거를 제시하고자 한다. 지도 자료를 통해 독도의 영토주권을 재확인하고, 영남대학교가 소장하고 있는 독도 관련 고지도의 가치를 높이는 동시에 독도연구의 구심점으로서 영남대학교 독도연구소의 위상을 확고히 하는데 그 의의를 두고 있다. 18세기이후 한국의 고지도, 특히 강원도 폭상에 나타난 ‘독도’의 위치는 ‘독도’가 울릉도의 오른쪽(동쪽) 또는 왼쪽(서쪽), 아래쪽(남쪽), 아래왼쪽(남서쪽), 아래오른쪽(남동쪽)에 각기 다르게 표시된 것을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 독도는 정확히 어디에 위치하고 있는 것인지, 각기 다른 위치로 표시된 독도가 현재의 독도위치와 같은 곳으로 어떻게 해석할 수 있는지에 대하여도 지도의 현황 조사를 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 영남대 소장 독도 관련 지도의 현황과 특징을 조사한 결과 조사대상 지도 가운데는 독도와 울릉도의 위치가 현재의 위치가 아닌 경우도 있었는데, 이것은 당시의 지도 제작법의 유형에 따른 현상으로 당시 고대 시대의 사람들은 독도와 울릉도의 위치와 크기를 정확하게 알고 있었고, 후대 시대로 오면서 지도로 나타난 증거자료가 되었다. 영남대 소장 독도 관련 지도는 이미 조선시대 이전부터 당시 사람들이 동해 바다에는 두 개의 큰 섬(울릉도·독도)이 있었음을 명확히 인지하고 있었다는 사실과 어로활동 등을 통해 두 섬과 인근해역을 이용해왔다는 명백한 사실을 확인시켜주고 있는 중요한 자료이자 증거라고 볼 수 있다.

This study attempts to provide evidence that Dokdo is a Korean territory, using 48 maps of Ulleungdo and Dokdo out of the old map materials owened by Yeungnam University. This study also aims at affirming Dokdo s territorial sovereignty using map materials and increasing the value of Dokdo-related old maps owened by Yeungnam University and at the same time, as a Hub for Dokdo Research, aims at establishing its status of Dokdo Institute of Yeungnam University. Since the 18th century, The old maps of Korea(Joseon Dynasty) have shown that Dokdo is located on the right side(East) or left side(West), bottom side(South) or up side(North) of Ulleungdo, especially a part of map of Gangwon-do. It can be seen that they are displayed separately on the left (southwest) and lower right (southeast). Next, the map also shows whether Dokdo is located correctly and how Dokdo displayed in different locations can be interpreted in the same location as the current Dokdo location. It can be seen through the status survey. Of the foreign maps depicting Korea in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially on the map of Japan, Dokdo is all drawn in Ulleungdo . It is said that there is also a way to fold Dokdo inside or below Ulleungdo on an old map of Korea. Foreigners at the time, who did not know how to fold the map in this way, displayed Dokdo on the left side of Ulleungdo in order to imitate the name of a place in the detailed part of Korean map Gangwon-do. The point is that Such a difference in the position of Dokdo cannot be seen without considering the viewpoint of the cartographer and at that time the geographical and oceanographic aspects. These map status surveys are important materials and are seen as evidence in that they have taught us the well-known fact that there were two large islands in the East Sea since ancient times and the clear facts that they have been engaged in fishing activities in the nearby sea of Ulleungdo and Dokdo
