조선 후기 주기적 울릉도 수토와 울릉도 인식 양상에 대한 연구

A Study on the Periodic Military Missions to Ulleungdo and on the Geographical Perception of Ulleungdo in the Later Joseon Dynasty

본 연구는 지금까지 울릉도 수토에 관한 각종 사례를 종합하고 누락된 수토 사례를 추정하여 울릉도 수토의 지속성과 빈번함을 확인하였고, 그와 관련하여 울릉도 수토 자료에 나타나는 울릉도 특산물 이용 형태를 통해서 조선 후기 사회의 울릉도 인식을 파악하고자 하였다. 확인된 사례와 추정한 사례를 통해서 1694년부터 1894년까지 최대 84회의 울릉도 수토가 시행되었을 가능성을 제시하였다. 지속적인 수토와 울릉도 특산물의 우수성 때문에 왕실에서 서민에 이르기까지 울릉도의 특산물을 이용하였고, 연안 백성들은 매년 울릉도로 항해하여 울릉도 특산물을 배 한가득 채취하였다. 함경도, 강원도, 경상도, 전라도에 이르는 연안에서 출발하는 많은 배들이 울릉도로 항해함에 따라 울릉도는 이들 연안 백성들의 생활권이 되었다. 독도는 울릉도의 시각공간 안에 있다. 따라서 독도는 좁게는 울릉도 생활권에 속하면서, 넓게는 연안의 생활권에 속하게 된다. 앞으로는 연안 백성들과 울릉도 및 독도와의 관계를 체계적으로 연구할 필요가 있다.

This study has so far sought to sum up cases of “Military mission to Ulleungdo(Ulleungdo Suto, 鬱陵島 搜討)” and to grasp the perception of Ulleung Island in the late Joseon Dynasty through Ulleung Island s special products, which were found in the data on “Military mission to Ulleungdo”. In the discovered and the estimated cases, it was suggested that up to 84 times of missions were carried out from 1694 to 1894. Not only the royal family but also the common people used unique and excellent Ulleung Island specialties in their daily lives. The coastal people sailed to Ulleung Island every year to collect a full boat of Ulleungdo s specialties. As many ships on the coast of Hamgyeong-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeolla-do sailed to Ulleung-do, this Island became a living zone for these coastal people. Dokdo is in the visible space of Ulleungdo. Narrowly Dokdo belongs to the living zone of Ulleung Island and widely to that of the coast people. The further study is needed to explore the relationships among the costal area, Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
