이 논문의 목표는 부르디외의 정치학을 조명하고 핵심 개념이라고 할 수 있는 국가와 상징적 지배의 기제를 분석하는 것이다. 부르디외는 베버의 국가론을 계승하면서도 상징적이고 문화적인 차원을 강조함으로써 물리적 폭력보다는 문화적 지배가 중요하다는 사실을 강조했다. 게다가 상징적 지배라는 개념을 통해 지배 관계가 사회의 다양한 장에서 서로 다른 원칙에 의해 반복된다는 사실을 지적했다. 한편의 문화 국가론의 시각과 다른 한편의 사회 전체에 다양하게 구현되는 상징적 지배는 공인이나 공식화, 표준과 공개 등의 형식을 빌려 서로 만나게 된다. 부르디외는 근대로 넘어오면서 점진적으로 사회의 상징적 지배에 있어 국가라는 장이 중요해지는 과정에 주목한다. 부르디외에게 근대란 장의 특수성과 다양성으로 특징지을 수 있고, 이런 다양한 장의 공존과 화합을 가능하게 만드는 것이 바로 논리적, 윤리적 통합성을 제공하는 국가의 장이기 때문이다.
This article emphasizes the contribution of Bourdieu in analyzing power and domination. Even though he is primarily recognized as a sociologist because of his institutional affiliation, his research interests reach far beyond sociology, especially into the domain of political science. I take the example of the state and symbolic domination as central theoretical concepts in Bourdieu’s work, and I explain how much the historical formation of the state in Western Europe has been critical in providing the focal point of a diversifying society with her numerous and various fields. In other words, modern diversity of pluralist societies seems to find an equilibrium with the central perspective provided by the state. In future research, this theoretical approach could be applied to contemporary Europe since the regional integration has been based upon the pooling of sovereignty and a new political architecture.
