A Study on the Tensile Characteristics for T&G Joint and Butterfly Joint

Wood, the main members of a traditional wooden building, is a good material with many advantages as a structural material. However, due to the limitations of length, it has been used more conveniently by various joints. T&G joint and butterfly joint, those have been most widely used in Hanok, are considered to be the most basic joint method in the connection of traditional wooden constructions. The tensile performance of the T&G joint and butterfly joint showed 2.1% and 1.3% compared to non-jointed member. As a result, there was only the possibility of using it as a long structural member. The tensile performances of T&G joint and butterfly joint showed statistical significance at 95% level. The failure pattern of both joints showed ductile fracture. Compared to brittle fracture in concrete frame structures, it is considered effective to reduce the damage of human life caused by earthquakes. Both joint method showed splintering failure at the point of stress concentration in groove part. In the next study, dimension optimization on the several joints needs to be obtained by both numerical method and failure test with various sizes in tongue and groove.
