With the speedy change in smart environment, single households are rapidly increas-ing in society. The forecast of National Statistics Office that over half the entire population would consist of single households in the near future also implies environmental changes in so-ciety and life at large. This study was conducted to suggest proper design of smart lighting in space and furniture for single households, based on the characteristics of single households, and the characteristics and the cases of smart lighting, and fundamentally, this study aims to im-prove the quality of single households’ residential environment. For achieving the study pur-pose, analysis and case analysis considering the previous studies, relevant literature, magazines, newspapers, and professional web sites were carried out. The scope of the study is limited to smart area, lighting area, and indoor environment area, and the temporal scope of the study is based on the data that have been gathered over the last 5 years. In terms of the four values (convenience, safety, economic feasibility, pleasant life) provided by smart environment, it was found that mainly, young males of single households took convenience and economic feasibility into account, and young females took safety and economic feasibility into account. Also, aged males took convenience and mentality into account, and aged females took safety and mentality into account. When the cases of smart lighting were analyzed, on the basis of the four values of smart environment, convenience and pleasant life were highly valued, whereas safety and economic feasibility were rated a little low. In conclusion, this study result demonstrates that the value of smart lighting would be used more efficiently when it targets aged single house-holds, and functional smart lighting for a bathroom or kitchen needs to be developed more.
