With the development of society, the function and role of library are changing quietly. Information can be obtained more quickly and conveniently through the Internet and other elec-tronic media. Once the library building no longer plays the core and main role in finding the actual information, it becomes particularly important to regard the library as a place for in-formation exchange and replacement. It is also important to encourage users to receive in-formation and services more actively rather than passively. The library should be a multifunc-tional, flexible and adaptable public space. Therefore, this paper puts forward the concept of elastic design for library design, and summarizes the characteristics of elastic design space, in-cluding fuzziness, growth, flexibility and compatibility. Summarize the principle and strategy of elastic design. In addition, six cases with elastic characteristics in the recent 10 years were com-pared and analyzed, so as to draw the common points, advantages and disadvantages of elastic design, as well as different design strategies, so as to explore the feasibility of elastic design in the reading space of public libraries. It is concluded that the multifunctional and flexible space created by elastic design can better meet people’s needs for library use.
