With the rapid development of information technology (IT), smart technology, and widespread use of smart phones, the development and sales of various smartphone-associated products have been increasing in modern society. These products have unique and highly sophis-ticated designs that incorporate the consumers’ tastes and preferences. In the wood product in-dustry, various gears and accessories that can be linked with smart phones have been released; these high value-added products utilize the advantages and characteristics of wood as main material. The metal decorative piece of a power-free wood speaker for smartphones introduced in this study is a smartphone-related product that has constantly attracted the customers’ attention. It represents the modern consumer trend with emphasis on originality and diversity amid the many product lines that have been released in the market. It is considered as a high value-added item that can be easily marketed through various product development and marketing strategies. Since the emergence of the product in the market, however, similar products, imitation products, and low-cost imported goods flooded the market, which resulted in problems such as poor design competitiveness and profitability. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new way forward through development of more differentiated and competitive products. This design development study was a cooperative project between the academe and the industry and was made possible through the Seoil University-Industry Collaboration Foundation. The project aimed to promote and create linkages in the design industry, which is one of the strategic industries in the five strategic re-gions of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Therefore, the study intended to focus on the tasks required for functional strengthening and design enhancement of the metal decorative rod, which is the core differentiated feature of the wood speaker. Furthermore, this decorative piece is the strategic prod-uct for export, as well as for the domestic market, of the participating business. In particular, this study attempted to develop an advanced method transcending the manually-oriented wood prod-uct development by actively utilizing computer graphic operation and 3D printing technology. Moreover, it proposed the design for a decorative rod as ‘a core differentiated part’ that can strengthen product competitiveness of wood speaker products and lead to profit increase for the participating business. Eventually, recommendations were made regarding the measures to con-solidate design competitiveness and secure independence in the wood product manufacturing in-dustry including wood speaker production.
