bstract: In order to improve the dimensional stability and to reduce the floor impact sound, we investigated the material properties of wood-based flooring boards treated with low elastic modulus and nonpolar paraffin wax. Waxed flooring boards have reduced water absorption and no dimensional changes in thickness, width and length. This is considered to be because mois-ture penetration was suppressed into the plywood which is the base material of the flooring board. Waxed flooring boards have poor adhesion to concrete due to the thin wax layer formed on the bottom surface. However, it can be improved by light sanding. The wax treatment re-duces the light-weight and heavy-weight impact sound level of the flooring board, in particular the heavy-weight impact sound level meets the performance criteria. The wax mainly penetrates through the vessels and is completely filled into the lumens.
