A Study on the Performativity of Furniture

As one of the behavioral functions of furniture, this study identified furniture focused on ‘performativity’, which requires active intervention and practice from users. It was confirmed that performance can be suggested as a function of furniture by grasping the meaning of performance in contemporary art, analyzing the application cases of performing art, and by analyzing the case of furniture to which performance is applied. It revealed that the implication is an art act to participate in everyday life. The core of the performance function of the furniture is that the user’s use of furniture over time becomes the subject of the furniture function. By recognizing the phenomena accompanied by the user’s performance, the theme of performance and a method can be visualized. To this end, by applying the method in which performance is formed in contemporary art to furniture, the performance formative method is revealed in contemporary furniture design as ‘the performing body’, ‘performing living space’, and ‘composition of performance records’. A study on the performativity of furniture is an artistic will to signify the user’s performance process and a new approach to furniture design, requiring a concrete exploration of the daily performance of furniture designers.
