언어인류학적 입장에서 보면 모든 언어는 화자가 다른 사람들로부터 자신들을 구분하고 범주화하는 문화적인 고유한 방식을 제공해주는데, 특히 인명(人名)은 개인의 정체성을 구분하고 유형화하는데 중요한 자료를 제공해준다. 이러한 이론적인 틀을 바탕으로 본 논문은 『몽골비사』에서 실제적으로 기술하고 있는 47개의 여성 인명(人名)에 초점을 두면서 몽골 여성의 인명 속에 내재되어 있는 유목문화적인 특징을 언어인류학적으로 고찰하고자 한다. 예를 들어서, 『몽골비사』의 여성 인명은 몽골 유목문화 속에 내재되어 있는 여성들의 정체성, 사회적 지위, 역할 등과 밀접하게 연계되어 있다. 즉 몽골 인명은 남성과 여성을 구분해주는 문화요소를 가지고 있는 경우가 많다. 특히 남성 혹은 여성을 상징하는 특정한 용어를 포함함으로써 인명은 성(性, gender)을 표시하기도 한다. 이러한 분석과정을 통하여 『몽골비사』에 표기되어 있는 여성 인명이 가지고 있는 몇 가지 특징을 기술하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 『몽골비사』에는 여성을 나타내는 접미사인 ’-jin‘이 덧붙여진 인명을 제법 볼 수 있는데 이러한 맥락에서 『몽골비사』 38절에 보면 처음 만난 여성에게 다음과 같이 묻고 그 질문에 여성이 대답하는 내용이 잘 기술되어 있다. 즉 13-14세기 몽골 여성들은 상황에 따라서는 인명(人名) 보다 씨족명과 여성이 속한 공동체 집단의 이름이 더 중요한 경우도 있었음을 알 수 있다. 또한 여성을 나타내는 접미사인 ’-ǰin‘ 혹은 ’-čin‘이 포함된 여성 인명의 경우에는 다시 이중적으로 여성을 상징하는 어휘와 친족용어 그리고 칭호 등이 중복해서 첨가된 사례와 여성 인명을 나타내는 접미사인 ’-ǰin‘ 혹은 ’-čin‘이 결합한 후 다시 여성을 나타내는 어휘인 ’ɤo’a‘가 첨가되고 여기에 여성을 의미하는 친족용어인 아내(gergei)가 마지막으로 덧붙여지는 삼중구조도 볼 수 있다.
In linguistic anthropology human names provide various cultural categories, such as social identity, gender, status, taboo, etc. In many societies women’s names are differentiated from men’s names and thus women’s names often contain specific characters and furthermore symbolic substances associated with women. On the bases of this aspect, I investigate women’s names inside The Secret History of the Mongols. Inside The Secret History of the Mongols all together 47 women’s names are mentioned and I intend to analyse these by folklore taxonomy. These 47 women’s names consist of single names as well as names with additional terms which are attached to these names. For example, the suffix ‘-jin’ and ‘-čin’ indicate women’s characters and some honorific terms (e.g. üǰin, beki, qatun) are also attached to women’s names. In addition, kinship terms (e.g. mother, little mother, grandmother, wife) are used with women’s names in order to clarify their social role and status. Several distinctive cultural elements can be found throughout the investigation of women’s names inside The Secret History of the Mongols. Firstly, some women’s names such as ‘Barɤuǰin-ɤo’a’, ‘Qo’a<ɤ>čin emegen’, ‘Qoriǰin qatun’ show that double cultural substances of women’s characters are embedded into those names. Secondly, particularly women’s names like ‘Mongɤolǰin-ɤo’a gergei’ and ‘Boroɤčin-ɤo’a gergei’ even present triple cultural elements and symbols.
