An Island Conflict in Northeast Asia and the Expansionist Policy of Japan during the Modern Age

일본은 근대로 접어들면서 영토의 팽창을 계속적으로 추구해왔다. 이 과정에서 한국과는 독도의 귀속 문제가 제기되었고, 중국과는 조어도(釣魚島) 귀속문제가 제기되었다. 특히 중국과 영유권 분쟁의 대상이 된 조어도는 전략적 가치가 대단히 중요한 곳이다. 여기에서 말하는 가치란 단순히 섬 본래의 영토적 가치가 아니라, 잠재적인 경제적ㆍ군사적 가치를 가리킨다. 그러므로 중국은 조어도에 대한 영유권을 확보하여, 일본의 부당한 이익이나 강점(强占)을 합법화시켜서는 안 된다.

Japan have pursued a territory expansionism policy from modern age. In the process of the policy, the question of title on Dokdo island with Korea was issued, and Diaoyudao (釣魚島) with China. Especially, Diaoyudao which conflict with China have very important value strategically. The value in this phrase do not mean a simple inherent value of territorial island but indicate a potential economicㆍmilitary value. So, China should confirm the territorial rights on Diaoyudao and must not legitimize the Japanese illegal interest or occupation by force.
