대체 역사물은 SF소설의 한 장르로 출발하여 이제는 한국의 대표적인 장르 소설이 되었다. 대체 역사물은 근본적으로 실증주의적 역사에 대한 거부에서 출발한 것이지만, 고증과 역사적 복원, 역사적 욕망의 현현이라는 방식으로 역사에 다시 포섭된다. 따라서 대체 역사물의 새로운 텍스트로서의 가능성을 탐구하기 위해서는 실증주의적 역사에 대한 반성이 필요하며 이는 반-사실적 가정의 역사적 활용이나 사변적 실재론의 철학적 탐색을 통해 가능할 수 있다. 이러한 반성은 대체 역사물을 학술적 글쓰기와 소설 양자의 형식을 넘어선 새로운 텍스트로의 지향의 가능성을 제시한다.
Alternative history started as a genre in the SF and became a genre in Korean popular literature. While alternative history implies challenge to modern positivist hsitoriography, it is recaptured by history, because it cannot operate without historical reconstruction, historical resilience, and representation of historical desire recaptures. It is thus necessary to reflect on the legacy of modern positivist historiography through counterfactual history and philosophical investigation based on speculative realism, in order to elevate alternative history as a new type of text. This reflection also points at the possibility of alternative history as a new textual form beyond academic exposition as well as novel.
