교회전통의 ‘수련(Exercitium)’을 신학생 양성에 어떻게 적용할 것인가?

How to Install Exercitium for the Formation in Our Seminary?

수련(Exercitium)은 어원적으로 볼 때 ‘성채(arx)로부터 (동물 등을) 내보내다.’는 뜻이다. 이것은 출애급의 영적, 유비적 이해를 표현해준다. 그리스 철학의 영향 아래서 초대교회 그리스도인들은 자신들의 신앙과 실천을 자신들이 속한 문화적 맥락안으로 해석하는 과정을 거쳤다. 그러나 성 예로니무스는 희랍화된 성경을 원하지 않았다. 그는 히브리어에서 직접 라틴어로 번역하고자 하였다. 이런 과정에서 초대교회의 일부전통들은 손상을 입게 되었다. 예를 들면, 그는 시편을 번역하면서 칠십인역을 따른 고 라틴어 번역의 ‘수련(exercitium)’ 대신에 ‘묵상(meditatio)’을 선택하였다. 그 결과 사람들은 수련보다 묵상에 더 많은 관심을 두게 되었다. 하지만 수련은 계속해서 유지되었다. 수세기가 지난 뒤 생티어리의 기욤은 스코투스 에리우게나의 라틴어 번역을 통해 그리스 교부들의 이해를 얻게 되었다. 그는 묵상을 관조적인 노력이 아니라 수련의 맥락안에 있는 하나의 실재로 생각하였다. 그는 동시대의 인물 중 수련(exercitium)이라는 단어를 가장 자주 쓴 저자이다. 최근 로마에서 출간된 사제 양성 지침서, 『사제 성소의 선물』은 ‘수련’(혹은 수행 exercise)이라는 단어를 대부분 ‘직무(ministry)’와 연결해서 사용하고 있다. 이는 교회가 무엇을 강조하고 있는지를 보여주는 하나의 지표이다. 그렇지만 관료주의적 교회를 벗어나려고 한다면, 우리는 교회전통에 따라 ‘수련(exercise)’을 문자 그대로 할 필요가 있다.

Excercitium etymologically means out(ex-) of castle(-arx, -arcere). It might be an expression for the analogical and spiritual understanding of Exodus. Under the Greek philosophy’s influences, early christian church did hermeneutic process for their faith and practice into the cultural context they belonged to. But St. Jerome did not want to have a hellenized bible. He tried to translate Latin bible from the Hebrew directly. In this process, some of early church traditions had been damaged. For exemple, translating the Psalms, He had chosen ‘meditatio’ instead of ‘exercitium’ which is in the old latin version juxta septuaginta. Consequently people concerned more on meditatio then exercitium but it still had been maintained. After many centuries later, Guillaume de Saint-Thierry got some understanding of Greek church fathers through Scotus Erigena’s latin translations. He considered meditatio not as an speculative effort but a reality which is in the context of exercitium. He used this word most frequenlty among his contemporaly writers. Recent book published by Rome, A gift of the priestly vocation - new guide lines of formation for the seminarians- used the word ‘exercise’ mostly with ‘ministry’. It is one of indicators what church stresses on. But to escape from the burocratic church, we need to do Exercitium(ex+arcere) following church traditions.
