영혼불멸과 중간상태에 관한 종말론적 고찰

Eschatological Study on the Immortality of the Soul and the Intermediate State - Focused on J. Ratzinger’s Eschatologie

그리스도교는 인간의 죽음과 관련해서 ‘종말론적 희망’에 대해서 이야기한다. 종말론이란 ‘최종적인 것들’에 관해서, 즉 개인의 삶이나 인간 역사의 마지막에 오게 될 죽음, 부활, 심판, 그리스도의 재림, 세상의 종말과 완성, 천국, 연옥, 지옥 등의 최종적인 사건에 대한 신앙적이고 신학적인 논의와 결론이라고 할 수 있다. 종말사건에 관해서 가톨릭교회는 성경과 성전의 가르침에 근거하여 인간의 죽음과 죽음 이후의 상태, 그리고 세상 완성에 대해 그리스도교의 전통적인 입장을 견지해 왔다. 하지만 20세기 이후 전통적인 종말론적 주제들은 여러 개신교 신학자들과 몇몇 가톨릭 신학자들에 의해 문제가 제기되고, 많은 비판이 대두되었다. 예를 들어, 그들은 성경에 영혼 불멸에 관한 직접적 개념이 없기에, 영원한 생명과 관련해서 영혼이라는 개념 없이 생각해야 하고, 따라서 ‘죽는 순간에 이루어지는 부활’에 대해 논해야 한다는 입장이다. 요셉 라칭거(Joseph Ratzinger, 교황 베네딕토 16세)는 그의 저서 『종말론』에서 오늘날 논쟁이 되고 있는 필수적인 종말론 신학과 종말론적 사건들에 대해서 논하고 있다. 그는 이 책에서 종말론의 중요 내용이 무엇인지 강조하고, 오늘날 논쟁이 되고 있는 문제들에 대해서 가톨릭교회의 전통적인 입장에 근거해서 규명해 나가고 있다. 그리고 무엇보다 그의 신학은 종말론과 관련된 문제 해결을 위한 근원적 출발점과 궁극적 결론을 예수 그리스도를 통한 규명, 즉 그리스도론적 종말론 해석을 염두에 두고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전통적 종말론과 오늘날 제기되는 종말론적 견해 사이의 상충된 주장을 이해하고 대안을 모색하기 위해서 다음과 같이 연구하고자 한다. 우선 요셉 라칭거의 저서인 『종말론』에 드러난 그의 종말론적 구상과 신학적인 특성, 전통적인 종말론의 주요 핵심 등에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이후 오늘날 종말론에서 가장 대립적인 주제, 즉 죽음 이후 영혼불멸과 관련된 논쟁에 대해 논의해 보고자 한다. 그러고 나서 이를 근거로 중간상태와 부활, 연옥 등과 관련된 여러 신학자들의 주장에 대해 살펴보고, 이에 대해서 라칭거의 종말론과 비교하여 해석하고자 한다. 그리스도교 종말론에 대한 올바르고 합리적인 이해를 위해서 전통적 종말론이 처한 오늘날의 어려움의 근본 원인과 비판에 대해 다양한 의견들을 통해 살펴보고, 동시에 오늘날 가톨릭교회에 필요하고 적합한 종말론이 무엇인지에 대해서 신학적으로 규명해 보고자 한다.

Christianity speaks of ‘eschatological hope’ in the discussion of human death. Eschatology is the religious and theological argument and conclusion that ponders upon the final event -such as death, resurrection, judgment, and the Parusia of Christ, as well as the world’s end and completion, heaven, purgatory, and hell- that marks the end of an individual’s life or human history. In regard to such a final event, the Catholic church has maintained Christianity’s traditional stance —seated in the teachings of the Bible and Traditio Sacra— about the death and thereafter of man, as well as the completion of the world. However, traditional understandings of eschatological concepts came under heavy criticism after the 20th century from many Protestant theologians and a few Catholic theologians. Such critics argue that, because the Bible does not contain a direct discussion of immortality, the understanding of immortal life should be devoid of considerations of the soul. Therefore, they contend that discussions should center around the resurrection that which occurs at the moment of death. In his book “Eschatology: Death and Eternal Life”, Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) ponders on the essential eschatological theology and events that are at the center of much debate today. He emphasizes the core of eschatology, and identifies the traditional stance of the Catholic Church that has recently come under scrutiny. Additionally, his theology places above all the Christological understanding of eschatology as the fundamental starting point and ultimate conclusion of reconciling ideas on eschatology. This essay aims to understand the conflicting stances between traditional eschatological understanding and those being raised today, and to search for an alternative. Firstly, the idiosyncrasies of Joseph Ratzinger’s theology and eschatological thought, as well as the crux of traditional eschatology, as they present themselves in his writing “Eschatology: Death and Eternal Life” will be considered. Then the most prominent controversy in modern day eschatology, which is the debate on immortality after death, will be discussed. With this in mind, the stances of many theologians as they pertain to purgatory and the intermediate state will be weighed, to then be compared with and understood through Ratzinger’s eschatology. The goals of this essay are: to contemplate upon the fundamental reasons behind criticisms facing traditional eschatology today for the correct and reasonable understanding of Christian eschatology through the lens of different criticisms and opinions; and to theologically identify what the eschatology that is appropriate and needed by today’s Catholic Church is.
