2000년 이후 한국과 일본 구석기 연구의 이슈와 성과

Review on the major Issues and Achievements in Paleolithic Studies of Korea and Japan since 2000 year

2000년 이후 한국과 일본의 구석기 연구에서 중요한 변화가 두드러진다. 한국에서는 1990년대 이후 활발해진 유적 조사를 통해 축적된 풍부한 고고 자료를 바탕으로 구석기 유적과 석기군의 이해 및 편년에 진전이 있었다. 나아가 기존의 방식뿐 아니라 원산지 분석 같은 새로운 방법을 적용해 연구하고, 그 결과를 한·일간 교류를 포함하여 현생인류의 확산과 행위 등의 새로운 관점에서 해석하여 적잖은 성과를 거두었다. 특히 2013년에 발간된 ‘한국고고학전문사전 –구석기시대 편-’은 50년 구석기고고학사에서 획기적인 이정표로 평가된다. 한편, 일본에서는 전·중기구석기 날조 사건으로 인해 구석기시대의 인류 거주는 약 4만 년 전부터 시작되었다는 견해가 정설로 자리 잡게 되었다. 이후 일본학계는 2010년부터 “네안델탈인에서 현생인류로의 교체극”과 “팔레오아시아 문화사학”이란 제목으로 현생인류에 대한 종합적인 연구를 10년간 수행하였고, 현생인류의 행위, 후기구석기 초기의 양상을 주제로 아시아구석기학회를 개최하며 날조 사건 이후 새 길을 적극 모색하였다. 또한 일본열도의 구석기문화와 주민의 형성을 규명하기 위해 인접한 한국의 구석기 연구 성과에도 큰 관심을 기울였다.

Significant achievements have been accumulated in Paleolithic studies of Korea and Japan since 2000. In Korea, abundant archaeological data accumulated by active surveys after the 1990s have been analysed with new methods including identification of the origin sources, and the results have been interpreted from a new perspective on the movement and behaviors of Modern Human, including Korea-Japan cultural exchanges. Besides, fairly progress was made in establishing the Paleolithic chronology and in investigating the features of lithic assemblages. Futhermore, the Korean Paleolithic Dictionary, published in 2013, is considered an outstanding milestone. Due to the hoax of Early and Middle Paleolithic, the view that human occupation was started after ca. 40,000 years become a prevalent view in Japan. From 2010, the Japanese academic society has conducted comprehensive researches on Modern Human such as “Replacement of Neanderthals by Modern Humans” and “Cultural History of PaleoAsia” for 10 years. And the Japanese Paleolithic Research Association held the annual meeting of the Asian Paleolithic Association on the subject regarding the Modern Human behavior and the Initial Upper Paleolithic. In addition, in order to investigate the arrival of Modern Human and relation with that of Korean Peninsula, various efforts were paid to know the accomplishments of the Paleolithic research in Korea.
