갈라디아서 4장 21-31절의 하갈과 사라의 비유에 대한 선교적 읽기

A Missional Reading of the Allegory of Hagar and Sarah in Galatians 4:21-31

이 논문은 갈라디아서 4장 21절 이하의 하갈과 사라에 대한 이야기를 선교적 읽기를 통해서 해석한다. 그것은 바울이 사용한 하나의 개념인 ‘비유’, 즉 알레고리적 표현을 기초로 한 해석이다. 이 해석의 가능성은 이 개념에 대한 이해 외에도 구약적 배경을 가지고 있다. 창세기 16장과 21장에서 하갈은 진정한 자유자로, 그리고 사라는 자유자이지만 스스로 자유를 잃어버리는 모습으로 나오기 때문이다. 그리고 사라의 이 모습은 갈라디아서 5장에서 자유자이지만 스스로 율법의 굴레에 매이고자하는 갈라디아인들과 정확히 일치한다. 이 논문이 주장하는 바는 참된 자유자가 종의 모습을 가지고 있다 할지라도 그리스도로 인해 참된 자유를 누리는 자이며, 바울은 그것을 갈라디아서 4장에서 하갈을 통해 암시하고 있다는 것이다. 갈라디아서 4장에서 바울이 비난하는 갈라디아 교회의 모습은 한국 교회가 보이는 모습과 흡사하다. 진리와 신앙의 순수함을 지키고자 하는 처절한 노력은 어느덧 타자에 대한 사랑과 긍휼의 상실로 나타나고, 스스로 값없이 받은 은혜를 타인에게 적용하는 것을 완강히 거부하며, 이제는 오롯이 정죄의 자리에서 다른 사람의 옳고 그름을 판단하는 바리새인과 같은 처지로 전락하고 말았다. 하나님의 선교 실천을 위해서는 사랑으로써 역사하는 믿음을 회복하고, 복음의 능력인 타자에 대한 포용성을 회복해야만 한다.

This paper interprets the story of Hagar and Sarah in Galatians 4:21-31 in terms of a missional reading. It is an interpretation based on the allegory, a hermeneutical frame used by Paul. In addition to understanding the allegory, the possibility of the interpretation also comes from the Old Testament background. In Genesis 16 and 21, Hagar turns out to be a truly free person, while Sarah starts as a free person but loses her freedom. And this portrait of Sarah is exactly the same as the plight of the Galatians, who Paul describes as free in Galatians 5 but who want to put themselves under the bridle of the law. Therefore, this paper suggests that truly free people are the ones who enjoy true freedom in Christ, even though they have the appearance of servants and that Paul implies this view in his description of Hagar in Galatians 4. The Churches in Galatia as described in Galatians 4 seem to be similar to the Korean Church. Desperate efforts to maintain the purity of faith and truth have instead leaded to the loss of love and compassion for the Other and a stubborn refusal to apply to the Other the grace that was freely received by themselves. They have become like the Pharisees, who judged others. In order to practice God’s mission, we must restore the faith that works through love and restore the inclusion of the Other, that is, the power of the Gospel.
