번역불가능성의 관점에서 본 넷플릭스 ‘오징어 게임’의 문화 관련 어휘 번역에 관한 고찰

A Study of Translation of Culture Specific References in the Netflix Drama Squid Game from the Perspective of Untranslatability

K콘텐츠는 근래에 전세계 트렌드로 자리매김하였다. 그 중 최근 공개된 넷플릭스 오리지널 한국 드라마 ‘오징어 게임’은 전세계 90여개국에서 1위를 차지하는 흥행 돌풍을 일으켰다. 한편, 오징어게임의 흥행과 더불어, 해외 시청자들의 컨텐츠 소비에 큰 역할을 하는 이 드라마의 자막 번역도 주목받았다. 하지만 드라마 전반에 등장하는 여러 한국적 요소는 번역으로 맥락을 전달하기 어렵기에, 자막의 일부에 오역과 손실이 발견되었다. 이에 본 연구에는 자막이 오징어 게임 내 문화 관련 어휘를 어떻게 번역하였고, 그 중 번역 불가능한 요소가 무엇인지와, 그 요소들과 영상번역의 특성이 어떠한 연관성을 가지는지를 분석하였다. 아랍어 자막이 영어 자막에서 중역되었다는 점을 고려하여 각 문화 고유어의 번역 양상을 분석한 결과, 넷플릭스는 자체 자막 번역 지침에 따라 문화 관련 어휘는 지나친 현지화와 변형 대신 원문을 충실히 유지하는 방법을 채택하였다. 본고는 그 중 한국 사회에서 인물 간의 관계를 보여주는 호칭어와 사회∙문화적 맥락을 내포하는 놀이명, 인명 등은 자막 번역의 시간적, 공간적 제약 및 추가적 설명 제시 불가성으로 인해 번역이 불가능한 요소임을 확인했다.

Recently, K-content has established itself as a global trend. Among them, Netflix s original Korean drama Squid Game , which was recently released, created a box office hit, ranking first in more than 90 countries around the world. Meanwhile, along with the success of Squid Game, subtitle translation, which plays a major role in content consumption by overseas viewers, also drew attention. The point is that some translations of Korean elements appearing in Squid Game have been missing or lost, and there are many contexts that there are difficult to convey through translation. Therefore, in this study, it is attempted to analyze how the culture-bound terms in the Squid Game was translated, what are the untranslatable elements, and how it relates to the characteristics of image translation. As a result of analyzing the translation aspects of each culture s native language considering that the Arabic subtitles were translated from the English subtitles, culture-bound terms were not localized, but foreignization was maintained according to Netflix s subtitle translation guidelines, It was found that the honorific terms showing the relationship between the people and the game names, human names, and place names that contain social and cultural contexts were untranslatable elements due to the nature of the subtitles.
