The Tuho of ToeGye and Education for Gyung

This thesis discusses the Tuho of ToeGye and Education for Gyung. The conclusion of this study is as follows. 1) Tuho in the Joseon Dynasty period: There was Tuho in the palace and school during the period of ToeGye. Now in Dosan Seowon the relic of ToeGye’s Tuho is housed. In the late Joseon dynasty Tuho play became popular among the ordinary people. Tuho play was considered not just as the means of education but as a kind of play. 2) ToeGye’s education by poem & the Tuho poem: as a poet and educatar ToeGye very much made the use of poem. The exchange of the Tuho poems between ToeGye and his student is an educational activity for mutual developmentt. In the poem ToeGye praised Tuho as an ideal not only for Etiquette study and music study but also for virtuous man’s study of Gyung. 3) Tuho play & the study of Gyung: ToeGye wrote in his diary that one hundred percent hitting of Tuho means the best achievement of Gyung-study. For him Tuho play is not just a kind of play but an essential means of study. ToeGye believed that JungJaeHumSook(整齊嚴肅) is a work of necessity for beginning students of Gyung-study. 4) Conclusion: Is Tuho just a physical play or mind-body training? Is the relationship between play and study an exclusive relationship? Education & play should meet in the place of concomitant learning. We want not only an enjoyable play but also a serious study(mutual communication). It is desirable that the seriousness of play & joy of study grow flowers in our community(school, home, society).
