What is the Perception of Evacuation Information Media According to the Personality Type of Hotel Users? : Applying MBTI and Big 5 Personality Theory

This study was conducted to draw up improvements of the institutional and practical aspects of hotel evacuation guidance system, examining the users’ perception about the evacuation information media of hotel, which is recognized as a multi-use facility of the general public and a facility that is universally available to domestic and foreign tourists. The study classified hotel users’ personalities applying MBTI and Big 5 personality theory, which are widely used in personality classification theory, and analyzed the relation between the users’ personality type and perception about cognitive information through in-depth interviews. As a result, the users were divided into 5 types: type A: Extrovert-Creativeness, Type B: Extrovert-Compositeness, Type C: Introverted-Proactiveness, Type D: Introverted-Adventurousness, Type E: Introverted-Compositeness. From the results of the analysis, the notable point is the comparison between Type A (Extrovert-Creativeness) and Type C(Introverted-Proactiveness). Type A perceives the hotel’s evacuation safety and cognitive information at ease while type C perceives those very sensitively. People can recognize the cognitive information differently depending on their personalities, however, it is necessary to have social awareness that evacuation informations is very helpful in case of an accident. Furthermore, it is analyzed that videos with stories are more effective to deliever the information and raise awareness about cognitive information than the evacuation map with letters provided in a hotel room. Based on the result, the study suggested discussion on the meaning of the safe space in a hotel, academic implications related to qualitative research such as hotel users’ personality and in-depth interview, and policies including instutional and practical improvements of the hotel’s safety system in an aspects of government and local government.
