국제자원활동에 참여한 특수교사의 경험과 의미

Exploring the experiences of Korean special education teachers who participated in the international voluntary services

이 연구는 국제자원활동단에 참여한 특수교사의 경험의 내용을 파악하여 그 의미와 본질적 구조를 이해하고 특수교육적 함의를 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해서 후기 실증주의적 패러다임 하에서의 질적연구방법을 활용하였다. 장애아동이나 장애 위험 요인에 노출되어 있는 필리핀 빈민지역 아동을 위한 국제자원활동에 참여한 15명의 특수교사가 연구에 참여하였다. 자료수집은 참여관찰, 심층면담, 현장기록을 담은 시청각자료, 현장 노트 등을 통하여 수집하였고, 수집한 자료는 Giorgi의 기술적 현상학적 분석방법을 적용하여 질적자료 분석을 위한 도구인 「NVivo 10」을 이용하여 범주화하였다. 연구 결과, 국제자원활동에 참여한 특수교사의 경험과 의미는 5개의 상위 범주로 분석되었다. 5개의 범주는 ‘참여 계기와 기대치: 지친 교직에서 벗어나 낯선 땅으로’, ‘현지에서의 팀별 활동: 아유레디(Are you ready)? 쌀라맛 뽀(Salamat po)! GT’, ‘현지에 대한 이해와 소통: 배트피플(batpeople)에서 봉제기술자로’, ‘회상과 의미부여: 해우소, 그리고 마중물’, ‘특수교육적 의미 찾기: 유대감과 활력의 순환’으로 구성되었다. 이와 같은 특수교사의 경험을 토대로 본질적 의미인 ‘연대와 소통을 통한 긍정에너지 돋아나기’를 도출하였다. 그리고 이러한 경험의 의미를 통한 특수교육적 함의를 알아보고자 하였다.

This study examined experiences of Korean special education teachers who participated in international voluntary services. Study participants were 15 special education teachers who went to Philippines to improve a quality of lives of people with disabilities or who are at risk of disabilities(e.g., poverty). The data was collected by participant observations, in-depth interviews, visual and auditory materials and field notes. Collected data was analyzed by phenomenological approach of Giorgi. As a result, five categories were drawn: (a) their reasons to participate in international voluntary services and what they were expecting for, (b) team activities in Philippines, (c) understanding and interaction with local people, (d) looking back on memories of voluntary services and making it meaningful experiences, and (e) finding implications for special education in Korea. Implications of this study are as following. First, international voluntary services was a great opportunity to improve special education teachers’ professionalism. Second, the participants from all over the country were able to develop a strong network. Third, the participants could replenish energy from voluntary activities. For the last, it is expected that this positive energy and experiences will bring out a freshness to field of special education in korea.
