Case Study on the Effect of Function-based Preferred Activities Reinforcement by Using Token Economy on Stereotyped and Academic Engagement Behaviors for Middle School Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder

이 연구는 토큰 강화를 통한 기능 기반 선호 활동의 제공이 자폐 스펙트럼 장애 중학생의 상동행동과 수업 참여 행동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보는 데 목적을 둔 단일 대상의 사례 연구이다. 이를 위해 먼저 연구 대상자가 보이는 상동행동의 기능을 파악한 후 해당 기능을 기반으로 한 선호 활동을 선정하였으며, 수업 참여 행동을 수행하면 토큰 강화를 통해 선호 활동이 제공될 수 있도록 일정한 중재 절차가 적용되었다. 연구 결과, 중재로 토큰 강화를 통한 기능 기반 선호 활동의 제공 절차가 시행되면서 점차적으로 상동행동이 감소하고 수업 참여 행동은 증가하는 양상이 관찰되었다. 이러한 결과는 중재 절차가 자폐 스펙트럼 장애 중학생의 상동행동을 감소시키고 수업 참여 행동을 증가시키는 데 효과적인 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다.

The purpose of this case study is to investigate the effects of function-based preferred activities reinforcement by using token economy on stereotyped and academic engagement behaviors for middle school student with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD). And the study is single subject design study. To do this, this study first identified the function of stereotyped behaviors, then selected function-based preferred activities. And preferred activities could be provided by using token reinforcement system when the participant of this study performed academic engagement behaviors. These intervention procedures applied consistently during the study period. It was observed in the study that occurrence of stereotyped behaviors gradually decreased and occurrence of academic engagement behaviors gradually increased by implementing the intervention procedures. These results show that function-based preferred activities reinforcement by using token economy is effective for decreasing stereotyped behaviors and increasing academic engagement behaviors for middle school student with ASD.
