‘공감’ 개념의 발달과 공감 능력의 진화

Evolution of the Term Empathy and the Ability of Empathy

현재 널리 사용되고 있는 ‘empathy’는 19세기 말 독일 철학에서 각인된 ‘Einfühlung’의 영어 번역어로, 관찰자가 예술작품이나 자연의 모습에 자신의 감정이나 생각을 투사하는 것을 의미하였다. 그러나 20세기 중반 이후 공감은 상대방의 생각이나 감정을 그의 관점에서 이해하고 존중하며 비판단적으로 수용하는 것이라는 칼 로저스의 정의가 광범위하고 보편적으로 사용되고 있다. 공감 개념의 역사와는 달리 공감은 인류의 발달과 더불어 시작되었다고 할 만큼 역사가 길며 상호 협력의 토대로서 인류의 진화 과정에 결정적인 영향을 끼쳤다. 인간이 공감 능력을 보유하게 된 첫 번째 핵심적인 요소는 오랜 시간 지속되는 육아 과정에서 형성된 유아와 부모 및 돌봄이 사이의 밀착 관계이다. 이 과정에서 상대방의 감정이나 생각을 이해할 수 있는 사회 인지 능력, 즉 공감 능력이 발달하게 되었다. 두 번째 요소는 인간 뇌의 전두엽과 두정엽의 발달로 인간이 고등 인지 능력을 갖게 됨으로써 언어를 사용할 수 있게 된 것과 관련이 있다. 인간은 언어 사용을 통해서 자신과 타자를 인식하고 이해할 수 있는 공감 능력을 발달시킬 수 있게 되었다. 공감에 대한 관심의 증대는 공감의 외연적 대상이 좁은 의미의 ‘우리’라는 경계를 넘어서 낯선 타자로 확장된 것을 나타내는 것이다. 이는 동시에 타자성, 이타성, 평등, 평화, 상호 연대 등과 같은 가치관에 대한 관심의 증대를 의미하기도 한다. 공감에 대한 보편적인 관심은 인간 정신이 진화하고 있고 삶의 질이 점차적으로 조금씩 개선되고 있음을 나타내는 징표일 수도 있다. 이 연구는 의료와 의학교육에서 이루어지고 있는 공감에 대한 교육과 논의를 촉진하고 확장하며 구체적인 교육 목표의 설정에 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Empathy is so important that contemporary era is called as the era of empathy. The concept of empathy is an English translation of German Einfühlung coined in German philosophy at the end of the nineteenth century. This concept initially meant that the observer projected his (her) feelings or thoughts into a work of art or a shape of nature. By the mid-twentieth century, the concept of empathy has been defined as a term in understanding, respecting, and accepting the other s thoughts and feelings from his (her) point of view. There are mainly two factors influencing the evolution of empathy. The first factor leading the human being to have empathy is closely related to the development of social cognitive ability to understand the other s emotions and thoughts in a close relationship between infants and caregivers during the long-lasting parenting process. The second factor is related to the development of neocortex in the human brain, resulting in higher cognitive abilities in human beings. With this development, humans have become capable of using language. Along with the use of language, the ability to recognize and understand oneself and others has been developed. Eventually this process resulted in the development of the ability of empathy. The recent increasing interest in empathy implies the expansion of the extension of empathy. It can also mean the increasing of th interest in values such as othering, altruism, equality, peace and solidarity. A universal concern for empathy can also be a sign that the human mind is evolving and the quality of life is slowly improving. This research can contribute to the reinforcement of education and discussions about empathy in medical training and to the reification of the goals of empathy education.
