의철학의 ‘현상학적 연구’ 동향에 관하여

On the phenomenological research trend of philosophy of medicine

본 논문은 의학에 관한 철학적 논의에서 ‘현상학’으로 탐구되는 최근 10년간(2010~2020)의 연구 동향을 모색한다. 그러한 동향의 중심에는 다음의 세 학자, 즉 툼스, 스베너스, 카렐이 있다. 이들은 공통적으로 의철학의 현상학적 탐구로서 ‘질적 탐구’를 중시한다. 질적 탐구란 의식에 주어지는 사태를 근본적으로 구성하는 대상의 의미로서 ‘질’을 탐색하는 작업이다. 툼스, 스베너스, 카렐은 이와 같은 현상학적 질적 탐구 방법으로 의학의 주제들을 연구한다. 가령, 이들은 공통적으로 신체가 반드시 주관을 배제하지 않는 일인칭의 체험으로부터 이해되어야 할 것을 강조한다. 이러한 신체로부터 체험된 질병은 객관적으로 수치화된 결과만으로 이해될 수 없기에, 이들은 질병의 질적 체험의 총체적 차원에 중점을 둔다. 질병에 관한 일인칭 관점의 연구의 중요성이 과소평가 되었다는 사실을 지적하며 툼스, 스베너스, 카렐은 질병의 ‘의료화’ 비판과 함께 의학의 방향성을 현상학적 이해로부터 간구한다.

This thesis analyzes the research trends of the last decade, which are explored as phenomenology in the philosophy of medicine. At the center of such a trend are the following three scholars: Toombs, Svenaeus, and Carel. They emphasize qualitative inquiry as a phenomenological inquiry of the philosophy of medicine in common. Qualitative inquiry is the task of exploring ‘quality’ as the meaning of the object that fundamentally composes the things given to consciousness. These three researchers study the issues happened in the medicine through this phenomenological and qualitative research method. For example, they commonly emphasize that the body must be understood from a first-person perspective experience, which does not necessarily exclude subjectivity. Since the disease experienced from the body cannot be understood only with objectively quantified results, they believe that the holistic dimension of the qualitative experience of the disease should be investigated. Pointing out the fact that the importance of research from a first-person perspective on disease has been underestimated, Toombs, Svenaeus, and Carel seek the direction of medicine from phenomenological understanding along with the critique of ‘medicalization’ of disease.
