질병서사에 나타난 고통의 언어와 증언의 윤리

Language of Pain and Ethics of testimony in Illness Narratives: With a focus on young women s illness narratives

본고는 젊은 여성들의 질병 서사에서 아픈 몸과 고통의 언어가 재현되는 양상을 밝히고 이를 통해 자아가 재구성되는 측면뿐만 아니라, 질병경험을 형성하는 생의학 담론과 사회문화적 맥락을 살피는 것을 목표로 한다. 궁극적으로 질병서사가 제기하는 증언으로서 서사의 윤리에 대해 규명하고자 한다. 젊은 여성들의 질병서사에서 고통이 체현된 몸은 통제할 수 있는 능력을 상실한 채 시간을 수평적인 공간적 감각으로 인식하며, 수치심을 느끼고 스스로를 낙인찍는다. 그러나 서술자는 질병을 나름의 방식으로 전유하여 수용하고, 글쓰기를 통해 질병경험을 삶으로 통합시켜 새로운 자아를 창조한다. 이로써 질병이 더 이상 상실이 아니라, 유한함과 필멸이라는 인간존재의 취약성을 깨닫는 계기가 된다. 한편 젊은 여성들의 질병서사는 젠더화된 의학지식과 성차별적 고정관념이 여성들의 질병을 오인하거나 설명할 수 없게 만들었다는 사실을 증언한다. 그리고 질병세계가 고유하게 인정되길 바라며 질병권을 제기하는 저항적 질병서사로서의 성격을 드러낸다. 질병서사의 증언은 독자와 공감의 유대를 형성하고, 독자는 다시 증언에 대한 목격자로 기능함으로써 윤리적인 실천을 예고한다. 이러한 체현된 고통의 몸이 말하는 증언과 서사의 윤리는 의료윤리의 서사적 역량강화에도 기여할 것이다.

This study set out to examine the reproduction patterns of a sick body and language of pain in young women s illness narratives and investigate the biomedical discourse and social and cultural context forming illness experiences as well as the aspect of ego being reconstructed, ultimately figuring out ethics of narratives as a testimony raised by illness narratives. In young women s illness narratives, the body in which pain is embodied loses the control ability, perceives time as a horizontal and spatial sense, feels shame, and stigmatizes itself. The narrator, however, monopolizes and accepts his or her illness in his or her own way and incorporates his or her illness experiences into his or her life through writing, thus creating a new ego. In this way, illness becomes a loss no longer and offers an opportunity to realize the vulnerability of human beings that are finite and doomed to perish. Young women s illness narratives testify that genderized medical knowledge and gender-discriminating stereotypes had women get mistaken about their illness or incapable of explaining it. Their illness narratives also wish that the world of illness will be recognized as a unique world and reveal their nature as resistant illness narratives to raise a question about a right to illness. The testimony of illness narratives establishes a bond of sympathy with readers, who in turn notice an ethical practice by functioning as a witness to the testimony. The testimony and ethics of narrative raised by the body of embodied pain will contribute to the reinforcement of narrative competence in medical ethics.
