본고에서는 『흥부전』의 대표 이본을 대상으로 놀보 처의 형상이 어떻게 변화하는지, 형상의 변화가 일어나는 동인은 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 『흥부전』의 이본이 거듭될수록 놀보 처는 그 역할을 확대해 가면서 시동생을 박대하고 자기 잇속을 계산하며 물욕을 드러낸다. 놀보는 결국 재산을 탕진한 뒤 잘못을 뉘우치고 일상성을 회복하지만, 놀보 처는 점차 정상성에서 멀어져 간다. 이처럼 놀보 처의 형상이 변화하는 데에는 이야기 향유자들의 판단이 작용하고 있다. 집안의 분란, 형제 사이에 불화가 일어난 것은 그 배후에 불온한 무엇인가가 있기 때문이라고 짐작한다. 형제 사이에서 제 역할을 못 한 배우자, 그리고 가산에 대한 배타적 소유 의식을 지닌 여성에게서 규범적인 여성과는 다른 심리적 특징을 읽어내고자 하며, 이러한 부정적인 시선이 놀보 처의 못된 심보와 물욕으로 표면화되었다. 놀보 처는 놀보와 한편에서 갈등을 증폭시키는 역할을 점차 확대해 가지만, 놀보와 달리 관계를 회복해야 하는 시가의 일원으로서 이야기의 중심에 서지 못했다. 그런 까닭에 놀보 처는 밥주걱을 들고 흥보의 뺨을 때리던 심술 맞은 형수의 이미지에서 한 발짝도 벗어나지 못했다. 시동생에게 인색하고 물리적 폭력을 행사한 놀보 처는 지금까지도 그 부정적인 시선에서 자유롭지 못하다. 흥보가 뺨을 맞는 장면은『흥부전』의 서사에서 떨어져 나와 음담(淫談)으로 재생산되고 있다. 재물을 사유하고 시동생을 제대로 대접하지 않은 놀보 처는 여전히 가해자의 자리에 서서 그 응분의 대가를 치르고 있다.

This study examined how Nolbo s wife s personality changes and what causes the personality change, targeting representative versions of Heungbujeon. This mentality surfaced with Nolbo s wife s bad heart and greed for wealth. Unlike Nolbo s wife, Nolbo s wife did not restore relationships with her family as a member of her in-laws. For that reason, Nolbo s wife could not escape from the image of a grumpy brother-in-law who slapped Heungbo on the cheek with a rice spatula. The scene where Heung-bo is slapped in the face by his brother-in-law is being reproduced as an obscene story to this day. This shows that Nolbo s wife, who owned property privately and did not respect her brother-in-law, was still perceived as the perpetrator.
