Jazz is one of the Toni Morrison’s trilogy on the question of love, which asks questions about numerous forms of love. Many critics of Jazz claim that the protagonist Joe Trace’s spooky love for Dorcas stems from the absence of his mother’s love. It is widely accepted that no matter how many times Joe searches for love, as he goes around the same track endlessly without escaping the pain of the absence of motherhood, he always fails to love. On the contrary, I insist that Joe can escape his spooky love by searching for the traces of his mother. In order to identify how Joe’s search creates love and new life, I analyze time-images of the Joe’s past memories in his present. I focus on images in the novel, because in the process of Joe’s tracing of his mother, many time-images spread out being inconsistent and fragmented just like time-image in the movie. Therefore, I adopted the concepts of the time-image, dealt with in Gilles Deleuze’s book Cinema 2: The Time-Image, to study how Joe’s search creates new life and love rather than being the failing love. By studying time-images including past, non-chronic, virtual time, I verify how Joe creates his new life and love through his tracing.
