Korean College Seniors’ Pragmatic Awareness on Request Strategies on Translating Emails at Work

  • 34

Emails are important communication mediums not only at work but also in school. Writing an email is an important task in everyday life. This study examines college seniors’ pragmatic awareness of request strategies on Emails. Twenty-four college seniors enrolled in employment English were examined within two conditions: Team Leader Group and New Employee Group. They were asked to translate the email based on their position. Team Leader Group used “Would you please~” or “Could you please~” in their emails while New Employee Group used only “please...”. Also Team Leader Group explicitly said they were the team managers in their emails. From this research, college seniors have pragmatic awareness on request strategies, but they showed a limited usage in request expressions. A variety of request strategies should be taught in English classrooms. Email writing should be taught implicitly during college years in order for students to adapt at work in the future. Translation activities can serve a role of promoting pragmatic awareness on request strategies.
