Time is often considered as one of the important factors to receive a higher score on official English tests as well as performance in English classes. This study examines the effects of time on reading performance and translation activities. Sixty-one students enrolled in college general English program were tested to identify reading performance using comprehension questions as well as translation. They were divided into two groups: Time-limited Group and Time-unlimited Group. The latter group showed significant differences on reading comprehension tests, and it means students with more time displayed higher scores on reading comprehension tests. For translation activities, Time-unlimited group added more meanings to the original sentences than Time-limited Group. Also, they tried to deliver authentic meanings rather than directly translating sentences. In addition, they did a better job on translating idioms than Time-limited Group. In English classes, time plays a role for students’ English performance both in reading scores and translation skills. In order to prepare official English tests, educators should consider the use of time in their programs.
