Two Approaches on Echoed Predicate Constructions Revisited

The aim of this paper is to investigate two proposals for Korean echoed predicate constructions (EPCs): head-movement analysis and phrasal movement analysis. Considering some properties of EPCs ― differences in inflectional realizations between the first and the second predicate, asymmetries in duplicating arguments/adjuncts, asymmetries between low and high adverbs, and obligatory doubling of short form negations, we will show challenges the head-movement faces, thereby supporting the claim that EPCs are derived by phrasal movement. We further strengthen our assumption by examining echoed serial verbs. Applying the head-movement approach to three structural analyses of serial verb constructions (SVCs) (i.e., head-adverb, head-complement, head-head relation) all fails. Rather, the phrasal movement approach appropriately manifests the patterns of echoed serial verbs.
