A Study on the Use of Literature in Christian Liberal Arts Education: Focusing on the case of “What Love Has Done” by Seung-woo Lee

  • 10

To meet the needs of developing relevant and applicable curricular for Christian higher education, especially liberal arts and general education, this study advocates literature education which integrates religious themes and issues using Christian literary works as class texts. This approach anchors its validity in the fact that religion and literature have had an intricate relationship throughout Christian history, sharing common interests in the sublime and spiritual aspects of man. In this regard, the short story “What Love Has Done” by Seung-woo Lee is exemplary for its Christian worldview and reference to Genesis as well as its literary accomplishments. This paper designs a teaching plan of this story, which consists of four phases: individual reading before class, group discussion in class, expanding and deepening the reading in contexts, and relating it to oneself. In this teaching plan is a focus on students’ active and creative participation, which can effectively help students appreciate Christian values and encourage them to live up to Christian standards.
