미국 대중매체에 재현된 베트남전쟁 성폭행과 몰개성화

Sexual Assault and Deindividuation Represented in US Mass Media

  • 57

The mass media of the United States, particularly paper or video products, have not covered the sexual assault of the US armed forces in the Vietnam War. This paper examines the contents reproduced in mass media such as literature and movies to shed light on the cause of sexual violence in the US military during the Vietnam War. To this end, I discuss its aspects and characteristics by observing the contents of the sexual assault scenes in the US mass media such as literature and movies. In the process, Casualties of War, Full Metal J acket, and The Sympathizer are investigated in detail regarding the sexual violence. In addition, the main cause of it is explained by referring to related prior data. As a result, it is emphasized that during the Vietnam War, the US military was completely de-individualized through a highly collective process in boot camp education and actual participation. Therefore, it is possible that many soldiers did not hesitate to commit collective sexual assault on Vietnamese women. This research is meaningful in expanding the scope of the wartime sexual violence discourse by exploring the literature and films.
