The Narrative of the Syrophoenician Woman and Jesus (Mark 7,27-30) : Implications for Social Welfare Practice

본 연구는 마르코 복음서 7장 24-30절에 나오는 시리아 페니키아 여자와 예수의 대화를 분석하여 그 안에 담긴 사회복지 실천적 함의를 발견하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 예수는 당대에 사회적 취약 계층을 대상으로 활동을 하였다. 사회복지 실천가들은 예수의 사랑실천(caritas)에서 사회적 약자에게 임하는 자세를 교훈으로 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 연구방법은 클랜디닌과 코넬리(2000)가 제시한 내러티브 탐구로 접근하였다. 시간적 연속성에서는 예수가 여자를 만난 시점을 전후로, 유다인을 위한 구원자에서 이방인을 포함한 구원자로 정체성이 변화되었다. 공간적 상황에서는 예수가 바리사이들과의 논쟁 이후 조용히 숨어 있는 공간에 머물렀다가 대화의 장을 거쳐 이방인 선교의 장으로 이동하였다. 상호작용에서 여자와 예수는 대화로 소통하여 서로 변화를 이끌었고, 개인적 변화를 넘어 이방인 구원역사의 사회적 변화를 동반하였다. 이 이야기를 아우르는 주된 경험은 ‘대화를 통해 치유하고 상호 간에 긍정적 변화를 이끌어준 동역자의 이야기’로 이해되었다. 끝으로, 이 이야기가 사회복지 실천에 주는 함의로 성장을 돕는 동역자 관계, 직무 스트레스와 사명감의 관계, 열린 대화의 중요성을 논하였다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the dialogue between a Syrophoenician woman and Jesus in Mark 7,24-30, and to discover the practical implications of social welfare. Jesus worked for the socially disadvantaged in his day. Social welfare practitioners can learn practical lessons from the work of Jesus about the attitude towards the socially underprivileged. The research method was approached by narrative inquiry suggested by Clandinin and Connelly (2000). In terms of temporal continuity, the identity of Jesus changed upon meeting the Syrophoenician woman, from that of a savior for the Jews to that of a savior of humanity, including Gentiles. In terms of spatial context, after the debate with the Pharisees, Jesus retreated to a quiet hiding place and then moved to the field of missions to the Gentiles through the field of dialogue. In the interaction, woman and Jesus communicated through dialogue, leading to a change with each other, and accompanied by social change in the ministry of salvation for Gentiles beyond personal change. The main experience encompassing this story was understood as ‘the story of colleagues who healed each other through dialogue and led to positive change.’ Based on the research findings, the author discussed the implications of the story on social welfare practice with regard to the role of partnership in mutual growth, the relationship between vocation and workplace stress, and the necessity for open dialogue.
