The Necessity of Corpus Construction for choosing ‘the Basic Chinese Character’

The purpose of this study is to suggest a necessity of corpus construction by considering some principles to choose ‘The basic Chinese character’ in the perspective of teaching language. This study suggest some principles to choose ‘The basic Chinese character’ as below: 1) Considering the frequency; This is the most general criteria to choose the basic vocabulary for study. 2) Reflecting the correlation with vocabulary asset; The basic Chinese character should to high correlation with vocabulary asset about mother language. Because the correlation brings decreasing the burden of semantic analysis and increasing the utilization of studied character. 3) Dividing the basic Chinese character from the Chinese character for Chinese classics education; In the perspective of Chinese classics education the basic Chinese character is regarded as the Chinese character for Chinese classics education. But the basic Chinese character should to be divided from the Chinese character for Chinese classics education for efficiency and utilization. This study proposes the necessity of corpus construction to set the basic Chinese character as a way of the frequency. The corpus for setting of the basic Chinese character needs to some premises. The corpus should to secure lots of data as many as possible, involve the oral language data besides the written language data, and accept the learner’s needs. In addition to the corpus has to reflect the present language culture and consider the semantic frequency of a Chinese character.
