Ganjae Jeon Woo (艮齋 田愚; 1841~1922) spent an eventful life through the transitional period of history when the Joseon Dynasty was losing its sovereignty. In the situation of the turbulent period marked by the collapse of traditions and the loss of national power as a result of the invasion of foreign powers, intellects in those days had a consciousness of crisis and coped with the situation in various ways. Ganjae might deliberate on what the scope of practice of principles was to humans, and how far the actions of Confucian scholars should reach in such a troubled time. Ganjae(艮齋)’s scholarship was practical science for opening a new era by re creating and developing the theories of Neo Confucianism until that time, and it provided a ground for establishing the modern value of Neo Confucianism. With the organization of the Ganjae Society and active studies on his Confucian ideas and Neo Confucianism, the significances of Ganjae’s thoughts are newly illuminated. While most of previous research works focused on his Neo Confucianism, however, there have not been many studies on his literature although he left a large number of poems and prosaic writings and therefore his literary character has not been explained clearly. Ganjae wrote 92 prologues and 186 epilogues. In the extensive prologues and epilogues, it is believed that Ganjae recorded solutions to break through the national crises. Thus, this study purposed to find the viewpoint penetrating the general knowledge of the world (世敎) and his consciousness of self discipline, which he, as a scholar who turned his back on the world and pursued study, wanted to transmit to his descendents through his prologues and epilogues. Literature is merely a minor artistic skill but it has the power to rule the temper and to spread public morals infinitely throughout the world. From the viewpoint that literature contributes to people’s ethics and conversion in such an unprecedented troubled time, this study examined ‘the pattern of expressing the knowledge of the world,’ and explored how Ganjae’s view of literature as a means to transmit the way, which Ganjae thought, was expressed through ‘Tobonmunmal (道本文末-The way is first and literature is the next).’ Through this study are expected that his intention that he wanted to disclose clearly like the sun and the moon will be revealed and that the literary character of his prose will also be explained.
