蕙園 申潤福의 風俗畵에 나타난 妓女의 이미지 텔링(image telling)

Image telling of Gisaeng on the Genre Paintings of Sin Yoon-bok

In this thesis, for reading gisaeng image, I would focus on visual message that the author (painter) reflects on it. It is not only the meaning of gisaeng image by the author but also the communication mode of socio-cultural agreement or code. The gisaeng image, therefore, is not just reproduction of the author s visual experiment about gisaeng but representation and reconstruction of gisaeng by author s intention. With this background, I pointed out Sin, Yoon-bok (pen name, Hyewon; 1758?-after 1813) s city-genre painting which was shown up strong expression of gisaeng and merrymaking city life on Hanyang in late Joseon period. Hyewon, who regarded as an outsider , could very closed to the minority (lower-classed women and gisaeng) which was related to the majority (main nobilities and middle class people of the capital), so he produced more rich gisaeng image. According to the gisaeng image of Hyewon, we are able to understand their communication mode of story world, and feel empathy their lives by image telling. Therefore, I would research the image telling of gisaeng on Hyewon s genre paintings such as follows; First, I examine genre painting which is prevalent by the social context in late Joseon period with change of the majority s desire and idea. Second, I reveal Hyewon s viewpoint as an author through his life history and works characteristic. Third, I classify seventeenth gisaeng images of Hyewon s genre paintings album, ≪Hyewonjeonshincheop≫ by place, then analysis them by action. Finally, I interpret the image telling of gisaeng with their socio-cultural role.
