This study defines the background of sociocultural discussion related on usage of Chinese character as a language ideology and aims to research the language ideology which is contained in usage of Chinese character based on the arguments of Yonghak Jang and Jongho Yoo in 1960s. Yonghak Jang and Jongho Yoo have in common with cognition that the use of Chinese Character is an aspect of representation for Korean written language and sociocultural identity. But perspectives on language and social identity is distinguished between ideological chauvinism and nationalism. The Yonghak Jang s main idea of usage of Chinese character is presented as an ideological chauvinism. Chinese Character compensates for lacking nouns in Korean language and binds the thought of literary works. On the contrary to this viewpoint, Jongho Yoo insisted that using Korean character preferentially is a part of modernization of the fatherland and an awakening of sense of national identity. He criticized that Chinese character has the orthographic sovereignty is outmoded in spite of existing of Hangeul as independent orthographic system.
