艮齋 田愚의 「五書 五經吟｣에 대한 考察

The Study on Jeon, Woo s Poets from the prospective of the Five Books of Confucianism

艮齋 田愚(1841~1922)는 倭洋의 침략으로 인하여 국권 상실과 좌절을 겪었던 시대에 살았다. 그러한 시대를 살았던 간재는 ｢五書 五經吟｣을 통하여 그의 도학자적인 감정을 어떻게 표현하였는지 살펴보았다. 간재는 詩는 德이 있는 말로 문체를 삼아야 한다고 말하고, 또한 시를 배우지 않으면 더불어 말하지 못한다고 하였다. 이처럼 시에 대하여 긍정적인 입장을 견지하고 있다. 하지만 그의 문집에 수록된 시는 방대한 저술에 비교하여 소수에 지나지 않다. ｢五書 五經吟｣에 나타난 경전의 평가는 다음과 같다. 五書에서는 경전은 인간다움을 유지해주는 근본 요소로 보았다. 그리고 경전에 의하지 않으면 사리나 도리에 어긋나 인간다움을 유지하지 못하는 것으로 여겼다. 또한 인간이 지향해야 할 참된 가치와 내면의 바탕, 행동의 규범으로 여겼음을 알 수 있었다. 경전을 기반으로 하여 어느 한순간도 끊어짐이 없이 의리가 항상 내 마음에 젖어들게 해서 수도양진하고 실천궁행해야 한다고 생각하였다. 五經에서는 풍속의 교화와 백성들의 성정을 바로 잡고, 湯武와 堯舜을 추구하며 居敬窮理하는 성현의 도를 따르겠다고 표현하였다. 또한 학문 방법의 핵심개념으로 敬이 근본이 되어야 한다고 파악하였다. 간재는 구한말이라는 특수한 시대적 상황에서 수도양진의 시세계를 펼쳐 그가 지향하고 있는 지향점과 도학자적인 정신세계를 보여 주고 있다. 본고의 연구를 시작으로 하여 간재의 시문과 다른 산문의 면밀한 분석이 이루어지길 기대해 본다.

Jeon, Woo, whose penname is Gan-jae, is a representative Korean Confucian during the last Jeoson dynasty (South Korea) and alsothe last scholar from Jello province, who takes over the school of the famous Korean Confucian Yeol-gok and Woo-am. His achievement as a Confucian can only be compared to Nosa (penname) Gee-jeong, and shouldn’t be neglected from the history of Korean Confucianism. Through his life, Gan-jae displayed his philosophicalthought and concerns of his time and practiced the principles of righteousness and courtesy of Confucianism. While observing the ciaos of Japanese occupation over the Korean peninsulaand the Confucian crisis caused by that, he was willing to live his life by the words of Confucian such as morality can be established by basic principles of life. We have, recently, observed a movement of establishing the academy of Gan-jae school and conducted a couple of research on what Gan-jae had accomplished but barely on his poetry yet. Therefore, out of thought that he might have expressed his Confucian thoughts through his poets, this paper focuses on his works of poets throughout his life. Traditionally, Confucians have studied various Confucian scriptures to know about the basic principles of life and universal values, and, therefore, to live by them. Through his works of poet, this paper will focus on analyzing his way of thinking based on what is written in the Five Books of Confucianism. As a result, Gan-jae’s life as a scholar and Confucian will finally come into light.
