This paper examines the biography and works of Gim Seonsin, a literatus who lived in Joseon. Gim Seonsin went to China and Japan in early nineteen-century, furthermore he made an exchange with literati of China and Japan about scholarship and literature. At this present, Gim Seonsin is little-known. The paper principally traces Gim Seonsin s biography, this is basic research for the diplomatic mission (Tongsinsa) which Joseon sent to Japan in 1811. Gim Seonsin s family was very poor and lowly, Gim Seonmin who is Gim Seonsin s older brother and his father were Jinsa. Especially, Gim Seonmin went to China a year ago than Gim Seonsin. Gim Seonsin maybe gained from information of China. Gim Seonmin was very inportant to Gim Seonsin, because Gim Seonmin collected Gim Seonsin s works. The important thing of Gim Seonsin s life was the network it was the relationship between other literatus. Gim Seonsin was closed to Gim Jeonghui, Gim Myeonghui brothers, Gim Ryeo, Gim Seon brothers, and Sin Jaesik, I Myeongo, Jo Myeonho. The academic world of Korea, however, overlooked the relationships between Gim Seonsin and them. Cheongsandoyurok which is the work about the 1811 s Tongsinsa, it were read by Chinese as well as Korean. This was also evaluated with a literary work. It is necessary to the research into Tongsinsa in 1811 and the literature.
