This study shed light on the life and world in poetry of Seogye(西溪), Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤), who worked as a writer and educator in Cheongju(淸州) for the 16th to 17th centuries. Because there has not been full-scale research on Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤), this study investigated characteristic aspects of his poetry, based on his life and the main pillars of learning and thought. Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤) studied under Lee Jam(李潛), Seo Kih(徐起), and Park Ji-hwa(朴枝華) and based learning on Wigijihak(爲己之學). He strived to realize the world of Jujahak(朱子學), especially emphasizing Sohak(小學) and spreading Hyangyak(鄕約). Further, he worked hard for education in Cheonju(淸州), considering that it is his duty to discipline younger scholars after his father. He was a Confucian scholar who fulfilled all the social responsibilities as a guide and person in power as well as who concentrated on composing his own body and mind. The main pillars of Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤) s learning and thought are Juyeok(周易) and a geomoongo(거문고). He regarded Juyeok(周易) and a geomoongo(거문고) as the same notion with a difference only in whether it gives out a sound or not. Moreover, a geomoongo(거문고) for him was not an instrument for getting pleasure, but a means of overcoming an evil mind. Enjoying Juyeok(周易) and a geomoongo(거문고), he kept calm and self- possessed with everything and took it for granted that he lived by the order of nature. The salient points in the world of poetry by Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤), who trained his mind through Juyeok(周易) and a geomoongo(거문고), are that he ingenuously expresses the feelings and sentiments from daily and trivial realities and that he displays a life of leisure, enjoying Sansoojirak(山水之樂). Therefore, the distinctive character of Lee Deuk-yoon(李得胤) s poetry is Pyeongdam(平淡). This kind of inclination is considered to be deeply related to his academic attitudes, personal style or disposition of enjoying mountains and waters, being enthusiastic about Juyeok(周易), and being accomplished at a geomoongo(거문고).
