Songdang Cho Chun s Life and Poetry Looked through the 『SongdangJip』 - Focusing on Inter-relation between his Life-journey and Poetry -

Although the core of the change is the transformation from Koryeo to the Chsun in the history of dynasties, this transformation contains the religious-philosophical shift from Buddhism to Neo-Confucianism and the political power shift from the aristocrats to the newly arising gentries called Sadaebu. These transformations means that the establishment of Chosun is not only the formation of a new government but also a renovation shaking the fundamental of preexisting various political, philosophical and cultural phenomena. The subjects of this renovation were the newly arising Sadaebu, their establishment of Chosun dynasty means that the period in between the late Koryeo and the beginning of Chosun was the chaotic era of choice for the educated people of the time. The characteristic which the newly arising Sadaebu choice contains requires more approaches and researches not merely from political perspective but also from philosophical and literary perspectives. Also, the studies that reveals the characters of the whole two lineages of Sadaebu, as well as the closer examinations on each individual Sadaebu are required. This essay was begun to be an attempt to answer the two preliminary goals. Songdang Cho Chun, a typical Sadaebu of the late Koryeo, led the renovation policies, and became a meritorious retainer for his role in the establishment of Chosun. Indeed, it is thought that the studies on Songdang Cho Chun is the understanding about the literary character of an historical figure of the period in between the late Koryeo and the beginning of Chosun, as well as the research on the fundamental of later a government official s literature. Additionally, there is another meaning that the matching Cho Chun s life and his poetry can be a study of the progressive changes of literary worldview along with his life process.
