牧隱 李穡의 疾病에 대한 意識과 文學的 表現

A literary expression and a sense of illness of Lee Saek(李穡)

牧隱 李穡은 고려 후기인 충숙왕 15년(1328)에 태어나 조선 태조 5년(1396)까지 생존하였던 문신이자 학자이다. 이색은 고려의 인물 중에서 질병과 그 치료법에 대하여 매우 다채로운 기록을 남겼다. 이색은 腰痛·齒痛·眼疾·종기 등의 질환을 앓았다. 그중에서 요통이 가장 심각하였다. 그가 요통에 사용한 치료법은 찜질과 안마였다. 이색은 요통과 함께 치통도 앓았다. 그리고 치통의 치료를 위하여 丹과 散 형식의 약을 복용하였다. 이색은 白苔로 추정되는 眼疾을 앓았다. 또 그는 종기를 앓았는데, 바늘로 종기의 고름을 뽑아내고 고약을 붙여서 치료하였다. 그리고 보행이 불편할 정도의 다릿병도 앓았다. 한편 성리학자만이 느낄 수 있는 心性의 병을 더욱 심각하게 생각하였다. 그리고 그것을 성리학적 방법으로 치유하고자 하였다. 이색은 질병을 앓고 치유하는 과정에서 특유의 사유를 형성하였다. 그 중에서 두드러지는 것은 비록 病中이라도 결코 나태해서는 안된다는 적극적인 삶의 자세이다. 한편 그는 病의 고통이 長壽하도록 만들기 위한 자연의 이치라는 긍정적 생각을 하였다. 또 機心을 제거하여 번뇌를 없애는 일이 약을 복용하는 것보다 더 좋다고 하였다. 그리고 문학창작에 몰두하는 것이 고통을 잊을 수 있는 하나의 치유법이라고 하였다. 이색은 여러 가지 병을 앓으면서 병을 원망하지 않고 병에 압도되지 않기 위하여 많은 노력을 하였다. 그러나 그는 질병과의 싸움에 지친 진솔한 심정을 토로하기도 하였다. 그는 자신의 못난 외모, 질병의 고통에 시달리는 육체, 물욕을 이기지 못하는 마음이 가련하다고 고백하였다. 이색은 건강할 때 느끼지 못하던 것을 정서적, 심리적으로 경험하였다. 그리고 그것을 시의 형식을 통하여 표출하였다. 그의 병에 대한 대부분의 기록은 시의 형식을 취하고 있으니, 정서를 가장 잘 표현할 수 있는 양식이 시이기 때문이다.

Mokeun(牧隱) Lee Saek(李穡) was born in the latter part of the Koryo Dynasty(1398) and was dead in the former part of the Choson Dynasty(1396). As a bureaucrat and a scholar, Lee Saek(李穡) put on a diverse literary record of diseases and their treatment. Lee Saek(李穡) suffered from lumbago, toothache, eye disease, abscess and etc. Among them, lumbago is extremely painful. He cured lumbago with a hot pack and a massage. He cured toothache with medicines of Dan(丹) form and San(散) form. He suffered from morbid coating on the eye ball. As he suffered from abscess, he squeeze the pus with a needle and dress the pus with an ointment. And he s been having difficulty with walking since the illness in his leg. After suffering from illness, during the treatment, he has unique thinking. The most distinct feature of his thinking is that a check of a lazy life. In the other side, he has a positive thought that an acute pain is the natural law for the longevity. As a secret for the longevity, he suggested calm thinking and keeping tranquillity. He more prefer to renounce wordly desires and to remove the Gisim(機心) than taking Chinese medicine. He thought that to devote himself to writing is a cure for a disease. As a cure method of the illness of mind, Lee Saek(李穡) offered a developing great spirit of mincius(孟子) and a reading. Although he suffered from the disease, he didn t hate diseases. Mot to be overwhelm by disease, he exerted great efforts to overcome diseases. Sometimes he revealed his tired heart from a ceaseless fight against diseases. He had a pity on his ugly face, sick body, and a blinded by wordly desires. Suffering from diseases, he experienced strange feelings in emotion and mentality, and he expressed its experience with a poem. The most part of his record of diseases is a poem. The reason is that a poetry is the best way to show his emotions.
