17세기 전기소설에 나타난 삽입시가의 존재양상과 기능

The Existence Patterns and Functions of Inserted Poems in Chuachi in the 17th Century

삽입시란 소설 속에 삽입되어 있는 詩歌를 가리키는데, 우리 고전소설 전반에 두루 포진해있다. 즉 傳奇小說를 필두로 몽유록계 소설, 장회체 국문소설, 국문 애정소설, 영웅소설, 판소리계 소설 등에 다양한 형태의 삽입시가가 들어있다. 그런데 이와 같은 삽입시가의 모습은 전기소설에서부터 보이기 시작하였다. 최초의 전기소설 작품인 나말여초 시기의 ｢雙女墳記｣와 그 뒤를 잇는 조선전기의 『금오신화』와 『기재기이』, 그리고 17세기 전기소설 작품에 시가가 모두 삽입되어 있다. 이들 삽입시가는 전기소설 속에서 여러 가지 역할을 수행하면서 작품의 서정성을 높이기도 하고, 구성을 돋보이게도 하며, 심지어 작가의 재능과 개성을 드러내기도 하면서 전기소설의 미적특질로 자리 잡아 나아갔다. 본고에서는 그 중에서도 17세기의 4편의 전기소설, 즉 ｢주생전｣·｢위경천전｣·｢운영전｣·｢상사동기｣를 중심으로 삽입시가의 존재양상과 그 기능에 대해 살펴보았다. 이것을 도표로 정리해보면 아래와 같다. 1. 작품내적 기능(1) 구성상의 기능사건의 전개 / 장면전환 / 복선(2) 형식상의 기능의사소통 / 독백 / 총론(3) 내용상의 기능정경묘사 / 인물묘사2. 작품외적 기능작자의 재능과 개성의 발현 17세기 전기소설의 삽입시가들은 이처럼 다양한 기능을 수행하면서 서사 양식인 소설이 독특한 미감을 자아내게 하였다. 그런데 이들 기능은 각기 독립적이지 않고 상호 얽혀들면서 삽입시가가 서사 속에서 좀 더 공고한 자리를 차지하게 하였다. 즉 주인공의 심회를 표현하는 인물묘사의 기능을 하는 삽입시가가 동시에 사건의 전개나 복선의 기능을 담당하기도 하고, 또 상대방에게 자신의 감정이나 생각을 전달하는 의사소통의 기능을 담당하기도 하였다. 이처럼 전기소설의 미적특질의 하나로서 다양한 역할을 수행하였던 삽입시가는 이후 여타의 서사양식에도 영향을 미쳤으므로 조선후기 서사양식 전반에 걸쳐 시가가 삽입되는 것이 자연스럽게 받아들여졌다.

Inserted poems refer to poems inserted in novels and are found through the classical novels of Korea. Diverse forms of inserted poems can be found in Chuachi(傳奇), Mongyurok, chapter-titled, Hangul love, heroic, and Pansori novels. Inserted poems made their first appearance in biography novels including ｢Ssangnyeobungi 雙女墳記｣, the first biography novel between the end of Shilla and the beginning of Goryeo, 『Geumosinhwa 金鰲新話』and 『Gijaegiyi 企齋記異』from the former half of Chosun, and many more biography novels from the 17th century. The inserted poems performed various roles in biography novels, enhanced their lyricism, highlighted their composition, and even revealed the writers talents and personalities, settling down as the aesthetic characteristic of Chuachi. This study investigated the existence patterns and functions of inserted poems with four works of Chuachi from the 17th century, ｢Joosaeng-jeon 周生傳｣·｢Wheegyeongchon-Jeon 韋敬天傳｣·｢Unyeong-jeon 雲英傳｣·｢sangsadongyi 想思洞記｣. External functionsExpression of the writer s talent and personality Performing such diverse functions in Chuachi from the 17th century, the inserted poems brought out the unique aesthetic nature of novel, a narrative format. Their functions were not independent, rather mingling with each other and helping themselves take a solider root in narrative. That is, inserted poems would function as a character description to present his or her psychology, as the development of an event or underplot, and means of communication to deliver his or her emotions or thoughts to others at the same time. Performing diverse roles as one of the aesthetic characteristics of Chuachi, inserted poems influenced other formats of narrative later. In the latter half of Chosun, it felt natural to find inserted poems throughout the formats of narrative.
