요즘 학계에서는 1910년 경술년 한일강제합방 100주년을 맞이하여 경술년 순국선열 향산 이만도, 매천 황현 등과 같은 인물에 대한 조명이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 때에 개항 이래 정치적 사회적으로 수많은 격동의 와중에서도 변함없이 확고한 주체적 자세로 일관된 생활 태도를 보였던 구한말의 순국선열의 한 분인 수당 이남규의 율문을 대상으로 그 형식과 수사특성을 해명해보고자 하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 修堂은 자유로운 창작의식의 소유자였다. 사적인 글쓰기에서 그는 해당 문체의 정형성에 관계없이 변체와 파격을 스스럼없이 구사하고 있다. 그러나 창작에 대한 그의 이러한 시도들은 일탈과 방외로 연결되지 않는 절제된 자유로움이다. 그의 파격은 전통과 정형성이라는 큰 틀 속에 자신의 창작의도를 불어 넣는 형식으로 이루어지고 있다. 그리고 그는 문학형식에서는 자신만의 개성을 추구하기도 했다. 이러한 창작의식과 개성적 형식을 추구한 그의 글은 사물을 세밀하게 묘사한다는 부분은 다소 다름이 있을지 모르나 평포직서하면서도 번잡하게 나열하지 않고 단아함을 추구하는 그의 글은 18-19세기의 소품문의 흥취가 물씬 풍긴다.
Celebrating the centenary of Japanese Annexation of Korea in 1910, it has been getting the spotlight today in the academic world to the patriotic martyrs, such as Hyangsan(響山) , Lee, Man do(李晩燾), Maecheon(梅泉), Hwanghyeon(黃玹) and so on. And at such times, the focus of this paper to help explain the form and rhetoric function regarding provisions of a criminal code of Sudang(修堂), Lee, Nam Gyu(李南珪), one of the patriotic martyrs in the latter era of the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty, keeping a sense of national identity despite creating political and social changes since the opening of ports. Sudang(修堂) gives himself over to his passion for creativity. In personal writing, he departs from the standard pattern and has a good command of abnormal and unprecedented writing in his style. However, his attempt for writing is not connection with deviance and beyond the scope but with restraint. His unprecedented writing inspires his appetite for writing into a frame of tradition and departing from the standard pattern. In addition; his writings are marked by his strong individuality. His writings stressing creative power and individual style are somewhat different from a detailed description but reveal the distinction of essay literature in pursuit of elegance without listing scraps of information in the 18th and 19th centuries.
