A Study on Hwang Jun-Ryang s Travel Poems about Mt. Jiri: With a focus on Yuduryusangihaengpyeon

이 글은 錦溪 黃俊良(1517~1563)의 지리산 기행시 중 ｢遊頭流山紀行篇｣에 주목하여 그 속에 투영된 작가의 정신세계를 고찰한 것이다. 이 시의 형식적 특징은 지리산 유산시 가운데 가장 긴 장편 고시라는 점과 자연경관과 생태에 대한 묘사가 섬세하면서도 빼어나다는 점이다. 이 시는 176운 352구 2,516자로 된 장편시인데, 평성 ‘東’ 자를 기본 韻字로 하면서 叶韻을 하였지만 換韻을 하지 않았다는 점에서 시인으로서의 빼어난 솜씨를 유감없이 발휘한 작품이다. 이 시의 내용적 특징을 정리하면, 첫째 탈속의 경계에서 느끼는 仙趣, 둘째 登泰山而小天下의 의식, 셋째 지리산에 대한 자긍의식, 넷째 불교 및 무속에 대한 비판의식, 다섯째 민생에 대한 우려의식, 여섯째 역사를 회고하는 의식, 일곱째 천인합일의 삶에 대한 성찰의식으로 나타난다. 황준량의 지리산 유람은 정치적 갈등에서 오는 불화를 달래기 위해서였지만, 그 이면에는 현실에 얽매여 있던 자신의 우물 안의 개구리식 안목에서 벗어나 크고 넓은 정신적 지향을 통해 삶의 국면을 새롭게 전환해 보자는 의도가 들어 있다. 그래서 무한히 넓은 우주 밖으로 벗어나는 상상도 해 보지만, 결국 현실세계 속에서 삶의 가치를 찾으려 하고 있다. 또한 자신이 살고 있는 강토를 벗어나 더 큰 세상을 경험하고 싶어 하지만, 궁극적으로는 천명을 믿고 안분지족하는 삶이 풍요롭고 온전한 삶이라는 자각을 하는 것으로 끝을 맺고 있다. 이것이 그가 지리산 유람을 통해 얻은 소중한 가치이다. 따라서 겉으로는 仙遊를 하고 仙界를 지향하는 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 도학자로서의 정신자세를 일깨우고 확인하는 여행이었다고 하겠다.

This paper presents an investigation into the spiritual world of Geumgye Hwang Jun-ryang(1517-1563) projected into his Yuduryusangihaengpyeon, which is one of his travel poems about Mt. Jiri. The poem has such formal characteristics as being the longest excursion poem about Mt. Jiri and offering sophisticated and superb depictions of natural landscapes and ecosystems. It is a long poem comprised of 176 woons, 352 gus, and 2,516 letters. Hwang exercised his exceptional poet-writing skills to his heart s content in this poem by applying Hwangwoon with the basic rhyming character, Dong in Pyeongseong, but not Hyeopwoon. The poem also has the following content characteristics: first, Seonchui at the unworldly boundary; second, the awareness of a small world when seen from the mountain top; third, pride in Mt. Jiri; fourth, criticism of Buddhism and shamanist practice; fifth, worries about the livelihood of the people; sixth, recollections of history; and finally, self-reflection onto a life in which Heaven and man become one. Hwang made an excursion to Mt. Jiri to appease his trouble derived from political conflicts and also try to take a new aspect to life by graduating from his old viewpoint tangled with reality like that of a frog in the well and seeking out a bigger and wider spiritual world. He even imagined himself to move out into the infinitely vast universe but eventually decided to find the value of life in the real world. He had a wish to grow out of the land where he was living and experience a bigger world but finished the poem with a realization that one could live a rich and complete life by believing in Providence and being happy with the way things were in the end. Those were the precious values he got from his excursion to Mt. Jiri. The trip to the mountain actually made him realize and confirm a moralist-like spiritual attitude even though he seemed to have pursued an enchanted land and enjoyed himself in it on the outside.
